What is the angle between the noon sun on the winter solstice and the southern horizon for an observer at a latitude of 38° N?

  2. Well, the angle between the equator and the southern horizon is always:

    90 - latitude

    ... so at 38° the angle of the equator is 90-38= 52°. But at the winter solstice, the Sun is 23.4 degrees south of the equator, so the angle between the horizon and the Sun would be:

    52 - 23.4 = 30.6°
