  1. Both is better, but the 401k is a better deal as long as you're getting a company match.  You will probably save in taxes on the Roth because tax rates are expected to go up to pay for our national debt, but a few percent in tax savings are nothing compared to the "free money" you get from the company match.  Even if the company only matches $0.10 to every dollar you put in, I'd stick with the 401k.

I make a contribution to my 401K that gets the maximum company contribution, after that I am contributing to a Roth IRA and making other investments for my retirement portfolio like paying off my mortgage and installing solar panels on my home that will not only pay for themselves but reduce the utility bill.

    Diversification of investment is good for a portfolio.
