Question:

At 6'2" WHAT SIZE Mountain bike should I get?

As stated I am 6'2" and wear size 32 length pants if that helps. I want to buy a used bike online and need to know if I am limited to searching XL frames or if larges will work. If brand makes a difference I am looking to find a Cannondale.

If riding style matters, this thing may not ever even see dirt. Prob just back and forth a couple miles on streets to work. I just think mountain bikes look cooler and don't want a road bike :)

Thanks,

Nick

  1. Sadly for you height finding a mountain bike frame to fit you will be hard.  If you were riding a road bike you would need at least a 25" (62 cm) frame.  But the mountain bike manufacturers generally limit the size of their products to 20" to 21".  You will most likely find the seat post too short and the handlebars way too low.  While longer seat posts are available, raising the bars is very limited.  I am 6'1" and ride with my hands on L-shaped bar end despite a high rise stem and riser downhill bars.

In all my years of bicycling riding I have only met ONE rider that desired his bars to be lower.  I have met thousands of riders that either raised their bars or wished their bars were higher for a more comfortable fit.

My custom framed tandem has a 9-1/2" long head tube.  Bars are the same height as my seat.  That is essential for comfort.  It is easy to lower your bars.

    Good Luck

  2. well  I would  get  a 26".   I am 6 ' even  and  it is what  I ride. The quality  of bike  is important. If you plan on doing  some extreme mountain  riding  get  a good sturdy  bike  with a double welded  frame. But  if it is just for street riding  a good medium frame  will be just fine..  enjoy !

  3. [26".... what is that? a bike for giants? most companies largest bikes are 20", there's NOTHING larger, I've seen only 21"..]

---- that is the answer- 20".

  4. to be safe, I'd go to a local bike shop and get fitted.  If they are a good shop, they won't push you to purchase one of their bikes.  Good luck.

  5. I am 6'4 and ride a 21 inch frame, but it is actually slightly smaller than what I should have (22 inch). I would say you would want a 20" or 21". Seeing how you said you won't ride the trail, the 21" might be more comfortable. I would have them put on some sort of road tire as well, it makes a huge difference.
