It had the coloring of a bee, but wings looked like a moth, and it bit like a horse fly! Also they chased us for no apparant reason, and some didnt even come off when we went running into the lake and went under water.

  1. Bees and wasps sting with the stinger for their rear ends.

    Horseflies chew with their mouthparts.

    Mosquitoes pierce with a proboscis.

All of them can leave a welt, and all of them can chase after you.

Horseflies can be very persistent, and are most likely to be aggressive when biting. You often get them near lakes.

  2. :O

did it have  a yellow stinger thing!?

cause if it did. i had one of those in my house once. it was creepy.

i didnt know what it was.

but if i were you, i would go to the doctor, cause it could have been something dangerous.

  3. Most likely it was a horse fly. I suspect they were bothering you after you swam. Bite hurts quite a bit.

  4. The variation in flies is quite surprising.  They can look like bees and wasps and their wings can be spotted with color.  But none look like a moth.  Flies that are predacious can bite and some will lay eggs in the skin but do not sting.

My guess is a robber fly.  They are especially aggressive, some look just like a bumblebee & their bite is reportedly quite painful.
