At a casino, what does it mean when it says "Blackjack pays 3 to 2"?

The game does not have to be blackjack but at all the table games in the casino the payout reads "...pays X amount to X amount". How do you calculate that? It's so confusing to me. Thanks.

it means when you get a blackjack you get payed 3 dollars for every 2 dollars you have wagered.

ie: if you bet 10, you will get payed 15

blackjacks paying 3:2 plays a signifigant role in minimising the house edge, beware of games where blackjack pay only 6:5 or even money as this increases the hosue edge by a lot

on the contrary, if you stumble upon a game where blackjacks pay 2:1, it is most likely possible to beat the game without even counting cards as it is such a beneficial rule.

If your hand is higher than the dealer's hand and also does not bust (or go over 21) you win the amount that you wagered.  If you bet $10, you get your original wager back as well as an additional $10 for a 1-1 pay off.

If you are dealt 21 or reach 21 and you beat the dealer's hand as well you get paid off at a higher rate of 3 to 2.  So if you bet $20 you would win $30 dollars instead of just $20 for a regular win.

It is important to understand the concept of payouts in any gambling game, like blackjack for instance. Payout is expressed as a ratio of two numbers, for example 5 is to 8. This is often written as 5:8. This payout means that if the player wagers $5 and wins then he will win $8.

Blackjack payouts vary with the type of bet and hands dealt. If the player loses he forfeits his bet. If the player and dealer tie then the rules of blackjack come into play. In most casinos ties result in the player gets his wager back. But in some casinos the blackjack rules are that the dealer wins ties. In this case the blackjack player loses his bet on a tie. This adversely affects the player’s chances and players should avoid blackjack tables where this rule is in force.

In usual circumstances the blackjack payout for a player winning is 1:1. This implies that if a player bets $1 he will win $1. The "blackjack" hand results in higher payouts. A blackjack hand is a two-card hand consisting of an ace and a card of value ten. The payout for the blackjack hand is 3:2. This implies that if a player bets $2 he will win $3.

There are two blackjack moves that pay out at 1:1 but are played differently. The first of these is the double down. In simple terms its 1.5 times your bet. If you divide 2 by 3 you get 1. ten pays fifteen. 100 pays 150. 1 pays 1 is called even money. 10 pays 10 and so forth
