Some places require a password to actually use the internet. You are probably showing a limited activity connection to the internet but can use local area network which does no good in a place like that.

Some airports require you to subscribe to a WiFi network service before you can log in.  Sea Tac requires you to pay for a subscription or buy an hour at a time.  It's kind of like how they do it at Starbucks.

Some airports provide the service for free.

If you really need to go on line while you wait for your flight you can always buy a wireless modem for your notebook computer.

Verizion and the other major carriers sell them and offer different levels of service.
