  1. Laws are more lenient towards rifles and shotguns because of the hunting aspect of their use.  Most people and kids hunt with rifles, so the laws are less strict about kids using rifles and shotguns.

A Pistol is easier to conceal than a rifle or shotgun, and most are not considered to be a hunting weapon, so they are more strictly controlled.

  2. I was shooting pistols and rifles with my family way before turning 18.

Then a little later I was on the firing line with a bunch of 18-19 and 20 years old girls in Basic Training in Alabama.

  3. Some ranges have a minimum age for shooting unless accompanied by an adult. There is no law in the United States about a minimum age to shoot a handgun. I would like to see it. It should always be done with supervision.

As a dealer I can not transfer a handgun or sell pistol ammo to those under 21.

I have taken my kids to the range hundreds of times and they are well below 18 years old and are quite accomplished with a .22 LR handgun. A Ruger 22/45 MKII to be exact as well as small rifles.

  4. Federal law requires everyone to be 21 in order to buy, own, posess, or use a pistol.  Same to buy pistol ammo.  Unless they have a certified job that requires it.  The only time somone under 21 can use a pistol is if it has been purchased by thier parent or guardian - AND - they are under the direct supervision of that parent or guardian when using it.

    It is the law.

    Hope this helps
