  1. Navigation lights and Logo (tail lights)  are turned on before APU start.  Beacon/Navigation are turned on before engine start.  Taxi light is turned on while the airplane is taxiing and shut off while stopped on the ground.  All lights (Beacon, Strobes, Nav, Taxi, Landing, Logo, Wing Inspection, Recognition)  are turned on for takeoff (day and night).

After takeoff the Taxi light is turned off (light turns off with a squat switch on the landing gear) but the switch is turned off also in case the squat switch did not do its job.  Some planes have retractable landing lights that have an airspeed limit.  In those planes the landing lights would be turned off during the initial climb.

Most companies leave the landing and recognition lights on until 18,000 feet.

The Nav, Beacon and Strobes are left on the entire flight.  The strobe lights are sometimes shut off in the clouds.

Descending below 18,000 feet all the lights come on again.

Airlines that I have flown wait to turn the taxi light on again until cleared to land (good reminder).

After clear of the runway all lights but the Nav, Beacon, Taxi and Logo lights are turned off.

When the engines are shut off the Beacon is turned off.

When the APU is turned off (or external power) the Nav and Logo lights are turned off.

  2. The strobes (anti-collision lights) are turned on for takeoff, kept on during flight, and then turned off after landing.  The procedures may differ slightly between airlines, but typically the landing lights are turned on for takeoff, landing, and when below 10,000 ft.  Usually the nav/position lights (red light on left wingtip and green on right wingtip) are kept on at all times, even during the day.
