I know that if you have a press pass, you can go back there and take photos, but how do you go about getting one?

  1. Backstretch areas at racetracks are restricted areas, so nobody can just go back there.

There are two methods you can use.

    1) Contact the track's media relations department and ask for a media credential.  You will need to be accompanied by a member of the track staff at ALL TIMES when in the barn area, but as long as you are legitimate media, they will be glad to do it.

    2) If you know a trainer, have him/her sign you in as a guest.  This works if you're looking to take photos of a horse/horses in his/her barn.  Just remember, if you are signed in by a trainer, he/she is responsible for you during your time back there, so don't try to just wander off.

  2. Contact the track and ask.

  3. I work at a race track doing Security, usually we do not allow anyone to come near the horse during racing, only assigned people who are suppose to be with the horses, I have had to turn people away even though they did have press pass.

But maybe when there is not any racing that day, get owners permission and present it to head of Security, I am not saying its going to be successful but you can try.  When racing days are not  in session what they call dark days, I have brought people in to see different horse with the owner or trainers permission, many of them are pleased that people show a interest, but I always go with them and respect the wishes of owners, trainers, and grooms.  Just a thought for you.
