I live near Charlotte, and we just got our first light rail line (Lynx Blue Line). I want to know how they turn around a train when it gets to the end

  1. They run around the train and place the power on the other end if they don't have power on each end already. The engineer just switches ends

  2. Doesnt have to turn around, it can push or pull

  3. Most light rail units have a cab at each end. When the train reaches its terminus the driver changes ends. When the unit is cleared for the return trip it is switched from the arrival road to the departure road. The interlocking of points and signals ensures that no other train movements conflict with this.

On a few light rail systems, e.g. some of those in use in Germany, the train enters a return loop. It follows the track round until it has gone through 180 degrees and is then ready for the return trip.

  4. there are train signals on all rail roads and if they dont obay them then there screwed.  if its passanger trains then its normally push and pull.  if its frieght than they normally just switch it really quick.

  5. they dont turn round they have cabs at both ends but next time you go look at the trak note the pieces of track that go accross to the next track these are called points they switch to let trains go to the other track

  6. Many years ago they used to have round houses, the engine would go in and the track would turn the train around, now they don't do that any more, the engine dosen't care which way it goes, it can go frontwards or backwards.

  7. ok check this out the next time you look at the rail notice that there is an engine at the front and at the back. there you go bud

  8. They're double ended cars.  They have a control cab on each end of each car.   This is the same way streetcars have been turned around for 100 years (excuse me, 110).  The operators takes the control handles out, locks the cab door if there is one, walks to the other end of the car, puts the handles in, and goes.

On double track, how do they cross over to the right track?   At the end of the line, you will see a "crossover" - a set of turnouts, track switches, which lets the car do that.  On most modern construction that's a double crossover.  Here's one right here.

  9. hi im a rail engineer and i can tell you how they do it they do a thing called shunting so the train at the front detaches from the cargo or passenger coaches and will go to the line next to it via swich it will go past the coaches and at the other end there is another swich it will then change to the line it started and will couple with the coaches the driver will change cabs and off ypu go
