  1. the gym has what is called a FM modulator for each channel they are broadcasting on. underneath the tv you will see what station to tune in to. that number of the station is not being used by any other radio frequency therefore they use local for the channel of the TV or music for you to tune into. is like a TV. when you pass the channels and you see that it goes from channel 36 to channel 39, that means that no one is broadcasting on those channels in between. its similar in radio. just imagine radio stations have giant FM modulators and they broadcast their music on it and they pay the government for the use of that frequency like 96.6 FM

    i hope this helps

  2. The gym gets the TV signal from a cable or satellite company. It then goes into a video/audio demodulator most likely a VCR. The video out goes to the TV set.  The audio out goes to a very very low power FM radio transmitter. The transmitter is set to broadcast on a frequency on the FM radio band. The gym chooses a frequency that no station in the area is using.  You pick up the sound via your FM pocket radio (Walkman or similar device).

The gym does this with each channel they want to carry.

There are more elaborate systems but they all work in a similar manner.
