  1. You must have been thinking about me Johnny. Taking exception to the 8 ball, you don't have to call anything in the APA in either format. It doesn't matter how it gets there or when it gets there as long as it goes.

You don't "call" where the 8 ball is going. You place a marker on  the edge of the table in the proximity of the pocket you intend to use.

A good question deserves a good answer Johnny so I'll elaborate on "slop", ESPECIALLY for APA skill level 7's, most 6's, higher level BCA players, and any other league player or worth that's been playing the game for over ten years. And let me address you as politely and eloquently as I can.

WHO THE Ff*%! DO YOU THINK YOU ARE that the world of pool should cater to you? You're just an AMATEUR like everybody else. If you had any skills at all you'd be playing at the pro level instead of being some table rat at your local pool hall playing races to 3 or 5 for $20.00. All of you seem to have forgotten your roots.

Leagues were designed and organized to play pool, promoted the game at EVERY level, and have FUN. And I hate to break the news to you but you higher skill level players  are a huge MINORITY in the leagues. The core players of the game are skill level (APA) 4's and 5's, then 2's and 3's, and THEN you.

Those players have a hard time putting a two or three ball run together on their best day. And YOU want them to call pockets as well as kisses and banks and everything else that YOU can do. The matches take long enough to play as it is. If it weren't for slop there wouldn't be enough time in the evening to get all the way through a match. Slop for the lower skill level helps to accelerate their game. It gives them something of a break and a fair chance at beating a higher skill level player. Nobody needs to call what their shooting for me. As far as calling a shot or pocket, 98% of you and I can tell somebody what a players next shot is going to be before THEY know what their going to shoot.

Instead of the higher skill level players whining and complaining about slop or which league rules are right or who has the biggest d*$% when they lay it on the table, we should just be playing pool and teaching and sharing with these new players what we know. Without THEM there wouldn't be much  of a pool league left.

Try and remember when you started playing and who you looked up to and admired and fashioned your style after. Some of these younger players are looking up to YOU now. So forget about the rules, take a player under your wing, and HAVE FUN!

Wow, I almost fell off my soap box!

  2. Hello Mr. King of the Losers,

I don't very often make a comment here, but in your honor I will. In fact I can't seem to stop myself. I'm a decent pool player myself. Not great, but good enough to be able to play in B.C.A. tournaments. I manage to win once in awhile. Some people are naturals at playing, I'm not,  I have to work at it.

When I play in a tournament at the local bars, the rule is call your pocket. You can slop it in there any way you're able too, but it has to go in your pocket. I've accepted a few of those shots when I made them, but I don't think I ever managed to do it without laughing about it.

My father could make shots that would have my jaw dropping, but he didn't have the patience to teach us, so he paid someone to teach us the basics. We had to take it from there. Coming from his blood, I could never play by the rules (or lack of them) that you are referring to.

When people get to drinking they tend to think they can do anything. How nice that somebody thought of a way to unite them. Not! That's just a way for them to do it on a regular basis and for the bar to make money. These are the same idiots that think you're supposed to hit their stick on the pool table every time they put chalk on their tip. Also when they make a bad shot (we know that happens a lot).

These are also the same idiots that you have to wait 5 minutes every time it's their shot because their shooting their mouths off to someone and not even looking in the direction of the table or they decided to take someone out on the dancefloor in the middle of a game.

So yes, I am glad that some one thought to start a league just for them and keep them the hel_ away from those who take little pride in what they are doing. Slop is slop!

  4. Nice matt, my little sister plays like that.  I've never played in an APA league, but after hearing more about it I'm glad.  Don't you have to be 21 also?  So much for the development of young players.

  5. In the APA you do not have to call anything but the 8. I actually prefer this rule, as pool seems to be the only sport where accidentally scoring can be held against you if you use a call shot rule in 8 ball.

EDIT: Johnny, there is no professional level APA. If fact, anyone who makes a living playing pool, including professional instructors, is disqualified to play. There are some Master's tournaments and divisions around, but they just lift the usual handicap restrictions that disallowing putting too many top players on one team.

And Kracker, I guess your little sister is smarter than you. Except once in a blue moon, the only time it makes any difference that it is call shot or no call shot is when the players are terrible.
