At what age, is it no longer appropriate to ask for someone's age?

I'm a 22 year old university student, and I find that the general consensus is that it's quite OK to ask the graduate students (even teacher's assistants) and fellow undergraduates their age (though there is a common sense that this question would be inappropriate to pose to your professors) . Responses are open and met without hesitation. And I know it's an OK thing to do with high school teens and young children. When does it become offensive?

  1. it all depends on the person, not the age

  2. like 18?

  3. It becomes offensive if you are not close to the person, and that person is at least 5 years older than you.  There are exceptions, such as when you are considering whether to date someone or not.  It is a "need to know" at that point.

It is never appropriate to ask a professor his/her age.

  4. hmmm,...if u know them well  its fine and if thay look your age thats fine to but yah idk

  5. for some reason the women I know hated turning 30 so if you look 30 or almost 30 we prob shouldn't ask

  6. I believe when people start reaching there 40s and 50s and they no longer look as young as they use to. People always want to be younger then 40, therefore they don't tell their age when they get past that number.

  7. Women dont like it when they are about 30+

  8. men don't mind being asked they're age, but i stop asking women at about the age of 20
