  1. Raw meat is fine for dogs, it is part of what is known as the BARF diet which stands for Biologicaly Appropriate Raw Food, or Bones and Raw Food. You can wean puppies onto it by using small piece of meat.

You feed an appropriate amount for their size and weight which you can find out by researching this kind of diet. They shouldn't just feed plain muscle meat though as it doesn't have enough calcium in it, so you need to feed them meat with bones in regularly. You can feed any type of meat, including raw chicken, eggs and fish, and a mixture of offals. Some people choose to feed some fruit and veg, others don't, either way it's ok since dogs will eat this sort of thing but they don't have to.

Personally when I am organised I feed raw meat for one meal, and a mix of cooked rice, veg and meat for the other. Meat is the most natural and appropriate food for dogs- what do you think they have those teeth for!! It is so well digested that if you feed your dog just fresh meat they only do small poos once a day to once every other day.

Carbohydrates are not strictly needed in the diet of a dog, dog food companies use them since they are cheap, bulk out food, and provide an easy source of energy. Dog food runs out quick, and cost me more than a home made diet does- I mean rice, a few bits of veg and a mix of cheap offal, rabbit, chicken cuts etc? Not expensive.

Dog food produces large heavy poos which shows that not a lot of it is digestible, and although it provides everything your dog needs, it is merely adequate. My dog's coat never shone like it does now on dog food, she looked scrawny, and she didn't enjoy it much. Now she seems more peaceful and satisfied after eating and in better condition. Dog food is also known for creating allergies, and causing terrible teeth.

Lastly don't feed raw eggs all the time since this can create a vitamin b deficiency and not too much liver either since this can cause Vit A toxicity.

It is unlikely your dog will get salmonella poisoning- this bug is not only found on raw chicken anyway. If you dog has an upset stomach it may be caused by too much veg, too rich a gravy, too watery a meal, or an upset in gut flora in which case try some live yoghurt.

Small (raw) bones every day or a larger bone every 3-4 days is ok, otherwise you can get constipation, little and often is best and you can buy minces specially made for dogs with ground bone in.

You don't need to worry about vitamin and mineral supplements. Healthy table scraps are ok.

  2. Raw meat carries bacteria and you can give your dog diseases that way.

  3. somehow i dont think this is good for her! i mean it will make her ill!

  4. give her as much as she wants, shell grow up to be big and strong, make sure u teach her the words 'attack' and 'sik em'

  5. Please, ignore the ignorant.

Puppies can be switched to a raw diet at any point in their lives. Many breeders wean puppies from momma's milk to chicken backs.

The kind of meat depends entirely what is available to you and what your dog tolerates. My guys eat primarily chicken, beef & fish. A bit of pork and wild game meat when I can get it. Also remember to include raw bone in the diet. Just meat does not provide the right nutrients.

The amount depends on many factors. Average adults will eat between 2%-3% of their body weights. Puppies, nursing b*tches and highly active dogs can eat double or triple that.

You have a lot of research ahead of you.

    here's a good starting point:

ETA: It's very rare to find parasites in commercial human grade food. The biggest threat with those is if you feed wild caught game. Also deep freezing kills off many of those...

Dogs digestive systems are far different that humans. They are more resiliant against bacteria infections. Dogs evolved eating raw and decaying meat.

I've personally found that it is CHEAPER to fed raw than a quality kibble. Of course it isnt cheaper if your feeding your dog c**p grocery or petsmart foods - but who would do that anyways???

  6. Any age.  A five year old should make a decent meal.

I don't suppose you would care to join Garry Glitter on a plane trip to oblivion would you...???

  7. why whould you give ur pit bull raw meat thats abit psycho if you ask me.

  8. It's definitely not good for your dog to feed her raw meat. Raw meat could carry all kinds of diseases, and thanks to being domesticated, your dog's stomach won't be able to handle it.

  9. Stick you're arm in her mouth and find out

  10. Rah Rah Thicko,

Do you have a dog or just a bull in a pit?

If it's the former, just dangle your bollocks in front of it and your problems will be solved....

  11. Hello, its very good for her but you'l have to get her on it slowly. You can check this website for more information http://www.roccosworld.net/  if you email them they will assist you in feeding your dog and how to slowly get him onto it, is the best diet you could feed.

You can feed cartilage bones with meat and big marrow bones need to be taken away after it looks done. I feed my pitbull puppy raw meat and started to from when he was 6 weeks old. The diet is a mixture of veg twice a week, a little offal and the rest meaty bones raw. You can buy food from here www.landywoods.co.uk .

Edit: see people like this (James) Who thinks the dogs put together all sorts of grains and other ingredients 40 years ago to make there diet into try and wet food. Or do you think they cooked there food and then ate it?  James grow up and do some research. If you dont know how to feed a raw diet then it is wrong, but if you do enough research you will achieve the best dog ever.

Edit: Whats it to you if she has a pitbull and there banned. Plus there only banned if you take them outside, not on your own property.

  12. Whatever happened to just feeding your dog just plain dog food. It's sold virtually anywhere and is less expansive than MEAT!

  13. do not feed you're dog raw meat.it will make dog very ill.and at the worst she could die.

  14. I hope you're in the US (assume you must be as there is no such breed as a 'pit bull' in the UK) because otherwise you are in breach of the Dangerous Dogs Act, as it is illegal to keep a bit bull type dog in the UK.

  15. Just bite her hard and when she bites back, then you will know she is ready.

  17. most dogs eat 2-3% their body weights but really active dogs aka pit bulls probably need about 8-9%. You have to find out what is good for your dog. You have to feed your dogs the bones as well because they wont get all the nutrition from meat alone. You have to be cautious because a lot of dogs are can handle all meat diets due to domestication and make sure the meat is safe. And be carefully about chicken, turkey or any other type of bone that will splint. If you have anymore questions just send me a meesge

  18. Would not feed raw meat to any animal. These diets are controversial. But there are many types of bacteria which is in raw meat that is not good for animals. Many animals contract worms from eating raw meat. I would check with vet for a good balanced diet for your dog. I would also not encourage any animal to eat anything bloody. Not a good thing. Good luck.

  19. As soon as you bring her home from the breeder.  She should eventually have a good variety of meats, anything you can find really.  Bones and a variety or organ meats are also necessary for a balanced raw diet (80% meat, 10% bone, and 10% offal (organ meat).  For newbies though, it's best to stick to just one meat (with the bones) for a few weeks; chicken is usually the most agreeable.

Always try to feed bone-in; the bones are what helps to keep her stools firm.  You can get a bag of chicken quarters (a quarter is a leg and a thigh) at the grocery store, usually for a good price, just make sure to always buy meats with no additives or fake ingredients.  Don't get wings, I've heard the bones are much more difficult for them to eat.

So, for her first meal, all you have to do is take a chicken quarter (or a thigh or a drumstick or however much she needs), set it on a towel and let her go at it (usually a good idea to do this outside the first time) =)  Keep her on the bone-in chicken for a couple weeks, then slowly introduce other meats, as well as organ meat.

    Good luck =)

    Add:

Don't listen to uneducated people who say "raw meat is bad."  Dogs are carnivores and their digestive systems are designed with raw meat and bones in mind, NOT corn meal and wheat gluten.  And -- they don't get salmonella!  Gasp!  ;)
