My Boy is 21 months and has decided he no longer needs his day sleep!! Some days he has one but lately he hasn't. If he does i only give him an hour because he is too hard to get to bed at night. I always thought (and still do) think kids need a nap in the day until they are about 4. I am considering stopping because if he doesn't have a sleep he is so easy to get to bed at night around 7.30pm otherwise with a nap he takes until 9pm/9.30pm to get to sleep..i dont think little kids should be awake that late! He wakes up between 8am and 9am..argh...lol...what would you do??

  1. My first born had to have a day sleep right up until he went to kinder, but my second never slept past five minutes at night and daytime was full on. My third did the two hour up to 2yrs old, to one hour up to 2 1/2 yrs, then to all day awake. My fourth, whenever she went into the car she slept, but that was it.

  2. If your son is getting 12 hours a night, I think that's plenty for almost 2!  As long as he isn't a cranky beast, it should be fine!

And when you think about it, you don't always get the recommended 8 hours a night, right?  And some people only need 6 hours, some need 10... children are no different.  They haven't been subjected to "you HAVE to be at work at THIS time", etc... so I think that their bodies are the best guide to when they need sleep!

My little one quit taking naps at about 2 and a half, but she wasn't cranky, so I didn't fight her on it.  She's 4 now, and every once in a great while she gets cranky... but as soon as I mention to her that she is cranky, she lies herself down for a nap.

I wouldn't worry too much- again, your son's body is telling him what he needs... if only there was a guide for us parents to translate, huh? :)

  3. if he wakes up at 8-9am your laughing.

mine is 2 and refuses to sleep aswell, he must think he will miss out on something! but without fail he will fall asleep in car at 2.30pm when i pick kids up from school. just enough time for a nap before we get home again.

I believe they need a sleep too, otherwise it does takes longer for them to settle and they also get grumpy.

with that being said your lucky cause mine wakes up 6am and goes to bed at 8pm.

good luck you will sort out a routine that suits you. if you want him to have a sleep wake him up earlier!

  4. In my family it went like this:

My sibling and I all slept around 7 hours a night from the day we were born, which was really lucky.  We slept other times also, throughout the day, etc.

When we were "older" babies, we never took naps, we would never sleep.

We started taking naps at around age 14, and stop after we're done with college.

  5. i never ever had a day sleep apart from when i was a baby/toddler so poo cuz im just fine

  6. If he sleeps well at night and isn't too cranky during the day then stop. He obviously doesn't need it.

My daughter is 6 months so we haven't stopped yet.

  7. I'm 17 and I take a nap sometimes in the afternoon. So I guess in a sense I still have my day sleep.

  8. I got rid of the sleep at 2.5 as my son would take till 11pm to go to sleep if he had so much as 10 minutes.I stopped his twin at the same time as it opened up the day for us. They went to bed instead at 5pm and slept till 7am. That worked great (tho weird at 5.15pm when the house was silent). You do what works for you and your kids. My daughter tended to have a sleep in the afternoon every few days. Up until recently she would have an afternoon sleep every couple of months(9 now) but that could be genetics lol, we love our sleep. Where my son would have to be horrifically sick to sleep in the afternoon.

So of he can cope without one then go for it. I am with you, he should be in bed earlier than 9.30 to give you some me time or time with the hubby. It may be he needs one every few days for a while but you will know if he does.

  9. nothing ,,,,we do the same as you..they will sleep when tired..just changes yhe routine as they get older
