pre school & pre-k are NOT the same. preschool is 3 yrs, pre-k is 4, and kindergarten in 5yrs. I know this because I have a niece that is now 6 yrs old.

my daughter started preschool at 3 1/2 (cause of her bday in jan). in wa preschool is 3yrs old, pre-k is 4 and kindergarden is 5

In Michigan preschool is ages 3 and 4.  They are not eligible for pre-K or Kindergarten unless they will be 5 before December 1st.  (at least in my area of Michigan).  I know people who live in Wisconsin and they have 4 year old Kindergarten there.  It would be nice because here we pay a lot of money for Preschool at age 4 and in Wisconsin they go to public school at age 4 for free!!!

my daughter goes to a nursery school which has 3 classes, the first is the 3 year old class, the second is the 4 year old class, and the last is the upper 4's and 5 year old class. in my area, a child can only go to kindergarden if they turn 5 by December 1 of that year. my daughter's birthday happens to be today (dec 12) so she'll go to nursery school again next year in the upper 4s and 5's class before she goes on to kindergarden. this year she is in the 4's class and she can already spell her name, and if i lay out cards with every letter of the alphabet on them she can pick out which ones spell her name. also she can count and visually recognize numbers up to 20.

Where I live pre-school and pre-k are the same thing.  There are 2 preschool ages - 3 year olds and 4 year olds.  Kindergarten is 5 year olds.  Some preschools cut off at a certain birthday.  Our local pre-school won't take kids born in June, July, or August.  They have to wait until the following year to attend preschool.  I enrolled my son in a private preschool, they run the same birthday cut-offs as regular school.  I think the cut-off is September 15th.  If you were born before then you can go to pre-school, if you were born after that you have to wait until the following year.

Preschool is different in different states Head Start in New Mexico at 6 months and it is called pre school...California when you are out of diapers. Most preschool is out of diapers.

pre-school and pre-k are the same schools which starts when they are 3 to 4 and some 5 year olds.

I only say some 5 year olds b/c my 5 year old is still in pre-school only because his birthday was in October...A child has to be or make 5 on or before September 30...Sad huh?  Kindergarden is for 5 year olds unless you failed for other reasons...
