My daughter is 4 wks and always hungry in the daytime, sometimes

eating twice in an hour, does this signify a growth spurt or do I not

feed her long enough at each feeding?

She usually nurses between 10-15 minutes

  1. It could symbolize a growth spurt, though eating that often does seem a little extreme. I would guess that it is one of two things causing it: either she is not getting enough to eat when she first nurses or she has a stomach ache and she is trying to ease it. Babies often eat more when their stomach is upset- it is the only way know to ease the pain. Is she spitting up a lot?

As far as your milk production goes, do you know how much you produce each feeding? Is it possible that you've had less to eat or drink over the past week and your milk supply is down? I would drink more fluids and continue trying to nurse. If she is still seeming hungry I might try hand expressing once just to see exactly how many ounces you're producing each feeding. My daughter would eat about 3- 3 1/2 ounces per feeding at this age.

    Good luck!

  2. humans go thru growth spurts their whole life.

  3. The 'standard' is 3 weeks/6 weeks/3 months/6 months ...but all babies are different. If she hasn't had her 3 week growth spurt, she might be late for it.

10-15 minutes is pretty brief.  Try encouraging her to nurse longer.  When she comes off, burp her and put her back on.  This will encourage her to eat enough to get full AND ensure that she gets the fatty hindmilk, which will hold her longer. 30-45 minutes is a more typical nursing session at this age.

  4. Well... my son was 8lbs 15oz and at his 2 week he was 9lbs 14oz then at 2 months he was 14lbs8oz.  So I think they are constantly gaining weight and growing at those young ages.
