  1. My daughter took on a summer full time babysitting job at 14.  My son went to work in the meat department of a grocery store at 14 1/2.  Before they were out of high school, both ran businesses from the home.  My daughter had a babysitting and tutoring business; and my son had a lawn care & landscaping business.  They paid their way through college with their businesses!

Daddy & I never encouraged nor discouraged them one way or the other!  They were just born entrepreneurs!

  2. oh, i don't know.... it depends. i certainly wouldn't want my kid get a regular part-time job unless they wanted a big-ticket item (like a car).  I think it's fine for teenagers to have jobs during the summer, but I'm on the fence about during the school year unless it's babysitting or something. I think kids should focus on their school work and sports/after school activities.  Kids are so over-extended these days!  And, no, boys & girls can start working at the same age as far as I'm concerned.

  3. When they start driving at the latest.

I think it's good for a kid to get a job once they start wanting to do stuff with their friends and would be asking their parents for money otherwise. There's not a set age. I think having a job at a young age teaches money management early on...which is important.

  4. Whenever they start wanting more money than their parents are willing/able to give to them.

Their main responsibilities need to be fulfilled first - school work, household responsibilities, commitments to teams - but, if they can keep that up, then it's fine for them to get a job whenever they want one.  Or not at all, if they don't want one (and if their parents don't feel it's necessary for their development - i.e. need to learn how to manage money or responsibilities better - need a dose of the 'real world' to learn a lesson for their lives).

I don't think gender has anything to do with this.

  5. 5 down the pits lol no not really  but  my kids started with paper rounds at 14 then went on to work whilst at collage....

my mum use to tell me when gran+grandad use to go down pits at 8 wow how life has changed ... ain't no pits now

  6. 15 or 16.

  7. There's no real reason for girls and boys to be treated differently about this.

I'd say for either, check your local laws and let them work as early as possible. Typically the earliest that someone can get a "real job" as opposed to mowing lawns and doing chores is 14 (with limitations) in the US.

The benefits to the child from working are more than just making money such as learning a "work ethic", learning to deal with different people than they do at school.

Check out the sources I've listed. They are a wealth of information.

  8. i think that they should as soon as possible... so start off giving them little jobs or responsibilities that they have to do.. which will teach them to be responsible and give them a sense of Independence... but around the age of 14 is when they can actually find real jobs and get paid for being in programs or delivering the newspaper or things like that... but the earlier you encourage them to work the earlier they will mature and it helps build character... and this is something that many kids these days are missing out on and why the generations are behaving worse and worse

  9. age 16 for both boys and girls
