Question:

At what age does a baby normally sit by his/herself?

My twins are eight months (7 months corrected due to being born one month early) and they don't sit up. If I sit them up they just fall to the side. Is there anyway I can encourage them or just let them sit when they feel ready to do so.

  1. every baby is totally different. you can always ecourage your baby just dont force it itwill come when it comes. my little girl sat at 5 months and is now crawling at 6 1/2

  2. You can't make a baby sit up until he/she is ready to. Their muscles need to strengthen enough to support their weight. Having lots of time on the floor (back and tummy time) will help your babies to develop strength and they will sit in their own good time.

Most babies start to sit independently between 6 and 9 months, but some don't until they are a bit older. As my daughter's paed has told me, the age at which babies learn to sit, crawl and walk, etc has nothing to do with intelligence or future potential.

  3. 8-9 months! say hi to your twins!

  4. I think anywhere between 5-10 months is considered normal, my daughter was 6 months and i have twin niece and nephew that are 7 months and are yet to sit (they were born 1 month early to)...i wouldnt stress about it...try propping them up by pillows or get a bumbo it will help to strengthen the muscles they need to use to sit....but you can do all you like and they will still do it when they are ready to....good luck:)

  5. I think the average is usually 6-8 months.  But kids always seem to break that rule.  my toddler was sitting up at 3 1/2 months, and crawling at 4 1/2 months.    Children will do whats best for them when the time is right.

They do have this new chair called a "bumpy, or bumbo."

I absolutely love mine for our baby.  We just got one a few months ago, and she loves it.  Shes in there secure, comfy, and able to watch things.  they come in all kinds of colors.  and if you look on etsy.com you can find hand made cloth covers for them too!

  6. Emma was five, almost six months.

  7. My son started sitting up by himself at about 7 months old.  I encouraged my son to sit up with the use of a boppy pillow and the bumbo (on the floor only).  It seemed to work and helped to strengthen his muscles.  Within a week or two of using the pillow and bumbo, my son would sit up by himself for longer and longer periods.

  8. my son is 7 months old and sits by himself but still falls over occasionally.

i would just sit him up and sit behind him every day until he seemed to get the balance to sit himself.

if you have a pillow (like a boppy works great) you can put that around them too so if they fall it won't hurt.

  9. keep helping them to try, but they will do it when they are ready. mine was about 8-9 months when he did.

  10. My daughter started sitting up on her own towards the end of her 4th month. I just gave her lots of practise cause she preferred sitting up in my lap than laying down when she was younger.

Just out of curiosity, how can I get a thumbs down for saying when my daughter sat up? Whoever gave that is an idiot.

  11. My daughter did at 5 months and my son just started sitting up at almost 6 months old.  I think average is around 7 months when they start to sit.

  12. I believe its 6-8 months, but being preemies they have a little more leeway. Have they been doing other things appx when they are supposed to? They give most preemies until they are two to be fully caught up developmentally. I wouldn't worry about it too much! If you are really concerned, talk to your doctor. Good luck!

  13. a neat trick is to sit them in the center of a boppy pillow. that way they have support and if they fall its on the pillow. give em time they will get it!!

  14. I started using the Bumbo chair when my son could hold his head securely, between 3-4 months.  I loved that I could interact across from him rather than sitting with his back to me.  After a few weeks he started sitting unassisted on his own a little more.  Only slip ups here and there.  Now, at 7 mo i just put a pillow behind him in case he tips backward, but that's it.  No need to support him further.  He gets out of the position and creeps and rolls around himself.  He just can't get into the sitting position by himself yet.
