My son is two and a half, and he can drink from a normal cup, but I still give him a sippy in the car, or when we go to someone else's house to avoid spills...Is he way to big for this?

  1. Heck, my 4 year old still drinks from a sippy cup if he's in the car (on long trips) or if I need to take a drink somewhere for him (like to the park, pool, etc.).

  2. I am with the ones who said their 4yo still drinks out of a sippy cup. My 4yo does too.

I would make my 29yo Husband drink out of one if I could. He is so clumsy, and makes such a mess.

I say let him give it up when ever.

  3. my son learnt to drink from a regular open top cup at a year, but he refused to drink from a sippy.

when he got to about 2 1/2, he had the sippy for cars or other peoples houses.

he's nearly 5, and still has the sippy or a sport bottle in the car.

he has regular cups most of the time, but sometimes, you need to know he will keep clean.

my 7 year old nephew is the same!

  4. um... when he's good enough with a cup that more gets in the kid than on him?  Every kid is different. Mine can "drink with a straw," but he doesn't quite have the "swallow" part down yet.

  5. No, he's not too big and kudos to you for teaching your son at 2 1/2 how to drink out of a cup.  My daughter is almost 3 and is just starting to drink from a cup.

  6. No, while in the car or in someone else's home, you're asking for trouble if give a toddler/preschooler a normal cup. Imo,  toddlers and preschoolers should have some type of sippy cup or cup with a straw and lid, especially in the car.

With my 4 y.o., I give him one of those cups you buy at the supermarket with various characters on it, that comes with a lid and straw or a juice box. And come to think of it, I don't allow anyone in my car with an open cup, it has to have a lid.

  7. Nope.  I'm 31 and still use a lid and straw in the car.  : )

  8. well my neighbor is 5 and still uses a sippy cup unless im there.

i think 4 latest they should be using one.

when i worked at a daycare, i was with the 16-24 month olds and they all drank from small paper cups, so i say now is a good time to start using a regular cup maybe at lunch and dinner for now and sippy cup the rest of the time.

  9. no at other peoples houses and car is good i still give my 5 year old a bottle with a spill poof lid. like a sport bottle .

  10. In the car i would continue giving him a sippy you don't need juice all over your car.,..lol...I would say to continue giving him a sippy until he is stable with a regular cup and doesn't spill when he's drinking it...:)

  11. No my child is 2 and a half and still does it when we go in car, but I would definately encorage him 2 use a cup when convenient

  12. My 4 year old drinks from sippy cups sometimes. Kids are clumsy and it helps keep things clean.

  13. Heck no, he's not to old.  My 3 yr old still uses one about 100% of the time.  mostly because her little brother will spill them.  But I think it's fine, just do what you think is right.
