I was wondering. I saw on the accelerated book list that it is only written at a third grade level, but is about a 6th grader wanting and getting her period. I remember reading it in 4th or 5th grade, but after I got my period. Is it better to read it before and then have an abbreviated s*x talk and at what age do you think that should be? My oldest daughter is 8 and finishing 2nd grade, but reads at a 4th grade level.

  1. There would be nothing wrong with her reading it now.Its a good time she would learn some things. And if you give her the book im sure shes going to have questions.which means you could just get the talks over with now

  2. 7  i had the baby talk when i was 7.i had the puberty talk at 5.

  3. I read it when I was 10 in the 5th grade. I loved it, it was before I got my period.

  4. Maybe in 5th grade... or when you think she is ready it is a wonderful book. I read in 5th grade tho. before my period....

  5. I read it in the beginning of 3rd grade.  At that time, I read at the high school level.  I had just turned 9.  I read it before I had my period and it made me comfortable once I got it.

I loved it.  In fact, I still have it on my bookshelf.  :D

Ready for my daughter who's just finishing 2nd.

  6. The reading level is 4.7 so i think when your child is reading at the level she is ready to read the book. My 2nd grader received this book along with 54 others for Christmas. She reads at a 4.5 grade level. She hasn't picked that book to read yet but, whenever she does she can read it.

  7. It was on the reading list for my daughter last summer when she was going into 4th grade (9).  My daughter is tiny and looks like a 1st grader (with a mind of a high schooler) so while she could understand - she couldn't really relate.  But, it was on the list.

  8. My oldest daughter read it in the third grade before her period and actually it paved the way for the "talk".  My other daughter is 10 and just finished reading it.  She had already started her periods so for her it was just a book.  I think it depends on the maturity of the kid more than anything.  if you think she is ready to read it and you are ready to answer questions then let her if not then wait.

  9. I was 10 and in 4th grade when I read it. But I think your daughter could read it this summer and then you could talk to her about it.

  10. I don't really think it matters since it's such a classic, but between the ages of 8 and 11 seem best. I think before she gets it, because I can guarantee you she wants it, and wonders why she hasn't yet. ;)

  11. I read it when i was in 4th grade. I think that is an appropirate time to read it because it somewhat prepares girls for what is about to happen to them in the near future. i think the s*x talk should come at 6th grade. because in junior high, thats when all the hormones start in boys and girls.

  12. I read it at 7, but I had already started puberty at 6.  I loved it and read it many times after that.  I liked it because I was able to relate.  I think a girl should read it when she just begins puberty so she will know what's going on and how to relate.  If she is 8 and there is no sign of puberty anytime soon, I think you should wait a bit so she gets the most out of that wonderful book.

  13. I think I was about 11 when I read it and it seemed appropriate at the time. I would say 4th through 6th grade. when I was 8 I was still reading Ramona books. Whenever you decide to let her read it, it would be a good time for a little s*x talk. The book also has masturbation in it if I remember correctly...definitely let her read it BEFORE she starts...after all, it's about a girl wanting to start her period. that's when she'll be able to relate the most.
