At what age/weight do you move your child from a crib to a bed?

I know that you want to move your baby to a bed before he or she gets big enough to crawl out of the crib and dump themselves on their heads, but is there a specific age/weight recommendation for moving the child to a bed?

I am pregnant and I want a co-sleeper and the one I am looking at converts to a crib that goes up to 30 lbs, but I don't know if that means I will need another crib after the baby is 30 lbs, or if the baby goes straight to a bed after that. I want to put another crib on my registry if I am going to need it.

  1. At 30 pounds your child would be probbaly between 2 to 3 yrs of age and would probably already be in a toodler bed. I would recomend that once your child is standing and pulling himself up the railing of the crib its time to move him to a toddler bed. This will probably be about 1 yrs old. When my daughter was 13 months she pulled herself over the railing and fell onto the floor. She wasn't hurt. So go ahead and get the co-sleeper and then get a toddler bed,

  2. If your child is happy in the crib they can stay there as long as they want (as long as they aren't trying to escape).

My son never climbed out of his crib, he just decided one day shortly after his second birthday that he wanted a big boy bed.

As far as weight, I wouldn't worry, my son is 2 and only weighs 25lbs and probably won't hit 30lbs till he's 3.  I wouldn't think you would need another crib if the co-sleeper works for you, but it might not be as stable- I'm not sure.

  3. Unless your baby is really big usually they are between 18 months and 3 years old before they are 30 pounds. That is the perfect time to switch them to a regular bed. We had a crib that converted to a toddler bed and we switched it into a bed on my son's 2ed birthday and he was 30 pounds. You need to switch to a bed once your baby can climb out of it. And at that point he will probably not fall on his head. There is no need for a 2ed crib.

  4. if it helps my daughter was 15 months old and we just bought a bed bumper to stop her rolling out ...dont think its a weight issue really , just sort it out b4 bubby comes so she doest get jealous she lost her bed to the baby...

  5. There's no recommended age or weight. Our older daughter moved to a bed at 15 months, but we didn't move our younger daughter (who was much more physically active and quite a little wanderer) until we had to. In both cases, though, our kids were under 30 pounds when they made the move.

Both of our kids were around 30 pounds at 2 1/2 or so.
