What is the difference in the height of a mountain and a hill? A mountain's supposed to be a natural elevation of the earth's surface having considerable mass, and generally steep sides, and a height greater than a hill. What is this height...?

  1. There is no mutually agreed  geographical convention of elevation for the determination of a mountain. Near where I live there is a mountain just 250ft

Many would agree that 1000m. or 3000ft  would be appropriate however. In some places it is based on relative differences

  2. A mountain is generally steeper than a hill, but there is no universally accepted standard definition for the height of a mountain or a hill although a mountain usually has an identifiable summit. (from wikipedia)

Mostly it depends on the people near it, if they called it a mountain then it's a mountain.

  3. A book was written about a fictional Welsh mountain "Ffynnon Garw". The book was made into a film "The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain" starring Hugh Grant.  According to the book a mountain must be over 300 meters (or 985 feet)

In the book, the mountain is re-measured by a group of English surveyors. They find that an earlier measurement was wrong and it is a little less than 300 meters. In accordance with the standard, the mountain is going to be re-named a hill on the new set of maps. The townspeople are very upset and develop a plan to change the height of the hill, so that it is called a mountain again.

  4. In Britain and the United States, a mountain typically is defined as a landform with an elevation of 985 feet above sea level.  Several U.S. states would have a hard time raising their "hills" to meet the standards used in continental Europe: 2,950 feet above sea level.

  5. If I recall correctly, it is a mountain when it is 1000 ft or more above sea level.
