At what point should I ask for a new TV?

I bought a 60 in wide screen Sony SXRD from Best Buy in 2006 with the extended waranty. Recently, the optical block went out. They replaced it along with the cooling fan. A week later the Optical Block went out again. We have not been able to watch this TV for a month. They came out and assess the problem and determined that it was the optical block again. This will take another week to replace it.

  1. Nice I work with Best Buy Geek-squad, Best Buy will give you a new TV only if some thing happens in the 1st year and that's if Best Buy Tech try to fix your TV for 3 times and they couldn't fix it.The 4y extended warranty is only for parts after the 1st year.

  2. Contact your state Attorney Generals office and ask about "Lemon Laws". They will let you know about the way to proceed. Probally to inform the seller that it is a lemon and has had the serial number registered as such, and when can you expect an "Equally valued replacement, or a  reimbursement of funds".

  3. Hey there, luckily i work for that company. Since you bought a service plan, which im assuming was for 4 years... the 4th time the geeksquad has to come out to your house, the TV is declared a lemon, and best buy MUST give you a free replacement TV. Don't go through Sony though, the cost of shipping your tv to them will cost about as much as your service plan at best buy, so take advantage of the opportunity you bought for yourself ;)

    Hope this has helped!

  4. If the optical block goes out a third time you have every right to ask for a credit of some kind. A letter to the Sony head office can help as well. Do not mince words in the letter but refrain from direct insults and expletives. There has been much written about the reliabilty of some Sony televisions and I personally wouldn't want a replacement but a credit towards another television. In the past I have had a similar problem with a tv and received a 10,000 dollar credit towards something else. Unfortunately it was the best tv on the market at the time and obviously couldn't get something better. A friend of mine had a vcr that through a design flaw had the same problem occur 5 times after which the store refused to fix it any further. If you let them continually fix the same problem this could happen to you as well. Good luck!
