Question:

At what points in your pregnancy do you get all your ultrasounds?

I asked a Q on here a few days ago about being 100% of the s*x because I had my anatomy scan u/s at 18 weeks the other day and the tech *thinks* it's a boy but sounded vague and I want to know for sure, so some people said to wait a couple weeks to get the other u/s, but I asked my OB yesterday and he said I don't get ANY more u/s's. At Kaiser (my HMO) they do one in the 1st trimester and one at 18 weeks and that's IT. He told me no more at all throughout the pregnancy unless there was something medically wrong. So now I'm wondering what do most doctors do? Are you all getting one at 20 something weeks also??? How many u/s's are you getting altogether???

  1. I had 3 altogether. One at 8 weeks to get dates. One at 13 weeks for defect tests and one at 18 weeks for gender. That was my last one too =(

But you can always pay money and go to those 3-D ultrasound places, it just won't be covered by insurance.

  2. Each time i was preg (4 times) i only got 2. One at 4 months and one at 5.

  3. My doctors office does one between 24-28 weeks.  I had to have two because they wanted to check a few things that they couldn't get a good look at in the first one.  A lot of insurance won't pay for more than one unless something is wrong.

  4. All doctors are different.  Usually first trimester and then anywhere from 18-21 weeks.  Unless something is wrong.  All you can do is go to a ultrasound place and pay for one yourself.  I just paid for a 3D/4D to get a 2nd s*x look, and definitely a boy.. But it was $165 out of my pocket.  Because I am 26 weeks and no more ultrasounds.

  5. I'm having my 1st u/s 19th september i will be around 13 weeks and then i will have another around 20 weeks and that will be it

  6. i got mine at 20weeks

you can pay for a 3dscan there worth the watch and u can see ur self if its a boy haha

  7. we only get one ultrasound here in ireland in our whole pregnancy's and its at 19 weeks!!!!!

  8. I believe I had 3 u/s.  That was 5 years ago though.  I had one when I found out I was pregnant.  One to know the s*x, and one toward the end to make sure everything was Ok.

  9. I haven't had any yet but my doctor said I will only get one at about 20 weeks unless there is something wrong!  And I live in Pennsylvania

  10. I live in BC, Canada.  I only had one ultrasound at 18 weeks.  We would have anymore unless is was medically required.

  11. dating scan anytime between 8 -12 weeks and then again at 20 weeks thats if you are in the uk, i'm not sure about other countries x

  12. with my first child i had a ultrasound at 6,9,17,22,27,and 31weeks. with my second child i had them at 5,7,10,14,18,24,28,and 32 weeks. I never had anything medically wrong to keep having them and i never paid for anymore then two of them w/ both kids. My fd just liked to do ultrasounds, I guess.

  13. Different facilities have different policies on ultrasounds. Most places do a first trimester ultrasound around 8-12 weeks, a detailed ultrasound around 18-20 weeks, and a third trimester ultrasound around 32-36 weeks for growth.

Doctors aren't allowed to do ultrasounds only to determine the s*x of the baby, because insurance companies will not cover it because it is not a necessity.

I go to The Women's Hospital and there they won't tell you the s*x of the baby unless they are positive of what it is. The told us at 18 weeks that we are having a little girl, and I asked her what the chances were that she was wrong, and she said it's hospital policy not to even hint at what the s*x of the baby is unless the technician is positive. Then at 24 weeks I had to have another (baby was laying in a funny position first time around and they couldn't get all the pictures they needed), they confirmed that she is indeed a girl.

  14. I had one at 10 weeks for my first appointment, then a very thorough one at 17 weeks for my amnio (amniocentesis is an elective procedure that is not always covered by insurance).  They did another one at 36 weeks just to make sure all was well.  Keep in mind that u/s is not 100% accurate for determining s*x.
