  1. in the USMC I believe it's colonels and up butttt I have seen col. in combat it just depends on your MOS, PT rating and willingness.

  2. i believe(and im just going on a limb here) lt colonel, i am pretty sure thats the cut off since colonel and up is very important/political. but yeah, i believe that in the Marine Corps when a Marine hits the rank of lieutenant colonel, they stop going into the field, and stay back becoming batallion/company commanders.

  3. in the marines combat is always a possibility but i think in the colonel ranks that you have more of a plan then over watch job instead of a plan the execute job

  4. Sorry Alex, as long as you are in the USMC you are subject to go where ever they want to send you. Besides, combat missions will enable you to get that high rank that you long for. Placement needs, know no rank. In fact, age is not even a factor. I was 55 years old and I received the call for combat. I have a very good friend that is a one star general, and he saw combat. Pack your bags Alex, we need you son.

  5. no fear -- battalion commanders can still lead from the front in the Marines.  And it'll take you a few years and tours to get that far up.

  6. a real military officer will always lead at the front no matter what rank or branch they are in.

  7. Probably Colonel or higher, Company Grade, Captain and below..well..it is a part of the job. Leading from the front. Once you get into Brigade or higher levels..you are pretty much out of the main action unless..well...you have a uh oh..

  8. By the time you make that much rank you will probably be burned out and want a break.  I don't know about the Marines but in our last tour in Iraq our Brigade Commander (a full bird) would go out on raids with us in the town.  Even the generals might go outside the wire to watch missions unfold.
