I have a 1985 Nissan 300ZX and it will be 25 years old in 2009. Will I be exempt from this testing next year? There is nothing wrong with the car, but I can't pass the inspection. Thanks.

  1. In NY the rule states that the catalytic converter and associated sensors must all work on cars and trucks back to the year 1996. I suppose every state has their own rules.

  2. Depends on your state. In St. Louis Mo. it used to be '71 and older forever. Then it went to 25 year's old or older. 2 years later it finally went to '95 and older.

It's currently still '95 and older are exempt. However, '95 and older must retain all emission components though there not tested whatsoever. The visual inspection of emission components is done during the Safety Inspection which all car's must still go through Bi-annually.
