  1. Its not the year... its the scarcity.

  2. the 1st two responders are correct.  The scarcity and demand are the two key ingredients in the value of a coin.  The condition of the coin both factors into the scarcity and the demand.  If your coins were brilliant uncirculated, well struck, and with no bag marks they would be worth much much more than the average worn coin.

Wheat pennies are worth some money just because they are wheat pennies as is also your nickle.  Not a great deal but nevertheless more than face value.  The pennies perhaps 5 cents each and the nickle perhaps 15 to 25 cents.

  3. It depends on several factors. How scarce the coin is, the year and quantity of the coin minted

And lastly, it all depends on the demand for the coins.

  4. Besides the scarcity angle, certain currencies like notes become valuable when they're inadvertently printed with some defects on them. They become collectors item and therefore valuable in auctions. Value is directly proportional to rarity.
