Atheist Spreading Religion, or Lack of?

Question

Why do atheist feel the need to spread atheism? Christians and other religious groups often believe that they are saving the souls of others by spreading the word of their god/gods. Atheist get none of these gratifications so whats the point of telling people that there is no God?

What, we can't have our own opinion?  You can, be we cannot? Kind of one sided don't you think?

We get the gratification of knowing that people have been given an opportunity to think for themselves.

A big part of it for me is self defense. If they're going to throw their beliefs at me, they had better put on a catchers mitt and be ready for the return toss.

On top of that, as has already been said, to us, we're scooping a good lot of people out of their ignorance. It's like scientists releasing journals of their discoveries to the public, to help educate the masses.

You see, religion is one of the greatest breeding grounds for bias, hatred, and bigotry. It's been an excuse or cause of almost every war in our history. If we could get rid of all religions, the most damaging difference between humans would go with it. We would be more at peace with ourselves as a society and a species.

You spread salvation of the soul. We spread salvation of everything else. As far as we're concerned, we spread salvation of everything real. Now, not 100% salvation, because religion isn't the cause of ALL differences, but most of them.

Besides, in all honesty, who doesn't like telling other people the truth, to be be proud that you know something that they haven't figured out? To be able to correct someone who's erred? Now, it's not noble, and it's certainly not a large part of why I do it, but it's a nice fringe benefit.

I don't walk around tapping random people on the shoulder and telling them that there is no god.  I just assert that belief when asked.

I am trying to 'save' all the god worshippers from a lifetime of fear and self torment.  Fear of being sent to a place that does not exist(h**l) by a being that does not exist(God).

Repeat after me. "I am a good person, I don't need to read from a book to know what is right or wrong.  My HUMAN instincts tell me sleeping with my neighbours' wife/husband is wrong.  I can guide my own life and will be happy without God.  Deep down I know there is no heaven and I will be dead in the ground like everyone else, and that's OKAY!"

There, you are saved for the rest of your life.  Your welcome.

Because as much as they accuse religion of pushing their beliefs given the opportunity do no less and in many cases like communist countries much worse.

Atheist do not decry any other religion!!

Ask yourself why it is only Christians that get attacked and not the other religions?!!!!

Do you not recognise that Christians are provoking retaliation and repudiation for their terrible attitudes?!!

Perhaps if Christians stopped their intolerant, egotistical, hate filled and bigoted postings things might change!!

Perhaps if Christians stopped eschewing education, science, evolution works of fiction and much, much more things might change!!

Perhaps if Christians stopped being the only religion opposing human rights and persecuting g**s, pro choice and so much more things might change!!

Perhaps if Christians stopped demanding freedom of religion whilst they deny it to all non Christians and persecute them things might change!! !!!

If Christians rediscovered the god of love and forgiveness and put aside all those terrible human emotions things would definitely change!!!!

Our stating our opinion/views and being free to do so is not "spreading atheism."

We don't come to your door, hand you info packets, preach on your street corners or beach boardwalks. We don't hold up huge signs outside your events telling you to accept reality.

I fail to see how we are "spreading" it. We are free to state that there is no god just as much as you all are free to state that there is. If a person's own "faith" is so weak as to be offended by our having the same freedom to be open about our viewpoint, then shame on them.

And if we actually did start doing all that soliciting, preaching, and sign holding...it would be perhaps because we want more sane people in the world...

What's the point of telling people there is one . You threaten them with a horrible after life and tell them things will be horrible for them here if they don't believe . Where is your proof ? You have none because your religion was built on the lies of one man .

Atheists claim to have the truth. Scripture tells us that the truth will set you free. However, they are still wrong. Just don't be mean and tell them that the devil made them do it, its a bad excuse.

Some people, no matter what religion they believe in, are bossy f*ckers who want you to understand their set of values and ideals and try to make you comply with them. Atheists (plural form, meaning many atheists) often do not like to see people spending their lives in a delusion.  More likely, those like myself, do not want our children to be taught willful ignorance in public schools and view private schools that teach willful ignorance as detrimental to society.  Many of us also object to discrimination against people with different sexual preferences based on religious belief.

I've been atheist most of my life. I did not make a big deal of it. I never try to convert anyone. If you ask I will explain my beliefs. But recently the evangelical right wing has been trying to force their beliefs on the whole nation. These zealots need to be stopped and I have been more vocal about my beliefs. If the fundamentalists get their way the USA will become a third rate nation with no innovation. Because fundamentals are basically afraid of anything new that may shake their fragile belief system.
