  1. The Catholic Church also persecuted Galileo. While I respect them for many things, I also wouldn't consider them the number one authority in the area of science.

  2. Im not too sure if i do..i need to research it more...but one thing is for sure...I dont believe that some supreme being created the universe and for some reason created humans just to worship him..and apparently we are not perfect, but he is....and this here lies a problem...something perfect cannot create something imperfect..

  3. Yes, I believe in the big bang.  It doesn't matter who first postulated the theory - it's a perfectly sound one.

  4. Yes but I think it will be completely overhauled soon by results at CERN . I have a good feeling about M theory it makes a lot of sense though I think some of the premises need adjustment .

  5. Yes, of course.  The Big Bang is supported by the weight of evidence.

Scientific theories are dependent on whether the evidence supports them, not on who came up with them.  (This is one of the big differences between science and religion, so it's understandable you might have trouble grasping that one.)  It wouldn't matter if the Big Bang was thought up by Jeffrey Dahlmer or Charles Manson; it's the idea that's important, not the person who thought it up.

Look at it another way: the idea that everything is made up of atoms was first conceived by Democritus, over a thousand years BC.  Democritus was a pagan, but you don't have trouble accepting the idea of atoms, molecules, etc., I assume.  That's because the concept of atoms stands up to the evidence.  It's survived all (or most) of the tests it's undergone, and just as important it's proven itself very useful.  It's been extremely useful to modern science and engineering; chemistry, genetics, medicine, and many other fields are built partially on atomic theory.  And for certain, we wouldn't be able to split the atom if atoms didn't exist.

  6. The Bible is the only ancient text to have accurately described the Big Bang theory of the origin of the universe.

  7. Lamaitre was also an astrophysicist who proposed the theory to explain all available evidence.  It made testable predictions that turned out to be very accurate so it is supported by a large amount of evidence.

The Big Bang is good science, and Lamaitre was a good scientist.

  8. The expansion of the universe has been studied to a great extent. I couldn't care less who started it, its a solid science (albeit with many still unanswered questions)

  9. It doesn't matter who formulated it.  Science is science.

  10. Yes.  It has now achieved the rank of established science, because it explains all of the applicable phenomena, and also predicts the occurrence of deuterium and lithium in the universe -- which could not have been created in any other way.

  11. Absolutely- this atheist does.

I hope you weren't trying to shock me with that revelation.

  12. So far, from what I can see...

It makes the most sense and is the best explanation, so yes, I believe in it.

I will continue to believe in it until it is proved wrong, IF it is ever proved wrong.

  13. Truth has no bearing on someone's religious beliefs...Newton was a very religious man...am I supposed to not believe in gravity because of his religion?

If he was right, then he was right.  Says more about his intelligence than spiritual alignment.

  14. Religion does not restrict the fact that certain people are just born to be great minds. (Just too many in the world think they are great when they aren't!)

I'm not full on with the big bang thing, but I feel it's a good possibility. Although, the answers to that might be something we've never thought of and may never think of...

  15. Yeah yeah, and quite a lot of mathematical concepts we use today were originally realised by Muslim mathematicians.

Who cares who wrote it, it's how it relates to reality that we care about.

  16. Yep.  It actually has evidence, unlike God.

  17. you joking?  yeah i just ignore any science unless it comes from an atheist lol

  18. The fact that it was thought up by preist doesn't mean that I can't believe that the concept of the Big Bang is well-thought-out and fairly logical explanation of things.  Gregor Mendel was a priest and he's often called the father of genetics due to his brilliant discoveries of dominant and recessive traits.

  19. Scientific theory doesnt rely on faith. If someone taught you that 2+2=4 but that person also believes in Zeus, does that make him wrong?

  20. it's not about religion

    it's called science

  21. The Catholics have a better history than the rest of the christians when it comes to understanding science. Not good, just better. No, it doesn't bother me.

  22. it doesn't matter who thought of it first, that doesn't make it any less plausible. i'm not going to ignore everything someone says just because they're catholic.

  23. His actual name was Georges Lemaitre, not Lamaitre.

  24. Just goes to show some christians can be intelligent.

  25. I understand and accept it yes.

  26. it is currently the theory I think is the best, I don't care who thought it up.

  27. I accept it. No, I don't care what the religious background is of the insanely smart person who developed it.

Heck, Pythagoras created his own religion that wouldn't allow people to eat beans, but that doesn't mean I'm going to doubt that a^2 + b^2 = c^2

  28. It is a very well supported theory; Lamaitre's religious background is irrelevant, science is universal.

  29. Don't waste you time asking what atheists think. They have not yet begun to think.

If they did they would be awed at Creation.

Man's perception of the Universe is false.

God created spiritually. The universe is a spiritual construct, not a material one.

  30. I don't understand it.  But it certainly sounds more probable than the world was created in six days, then he rested.

  31. The validity of a scientific theory is not based on the validity of the founding scientists beliefs but the validity of the provable scientific evidence..   The founder of a scientific theory could believe in flying purple baboons who spent their days dancing the tango for all I care, as long as the theory presented holds up to the scientific method the theory is valid...
