Question:

Atheists, why would you say bad things about God if that was the bet Satan made with God?

Job 1:11

But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

So this is the bet that Satan made with God, so why do some actually let the devil win by saying bad things(like calling Him a monster and such) about Him?

Not all say bad things about our God, but I would say that far too many do. ^_^

  1. Satan is a fictional character.

The Bible says in many places that there will be disbelievers, and "scoffers", etc. This is just another place in the Bible that says that, only it's in the form of a made up story about a bet between two magical beings.

It says that people will scoff and mock and disbelieve because it is completely LOGICAL that there *would* be people who don't believe the claims made by the people who made it up,  just as you don't believe the claims made by other religions throughout history.  It didn't take a magical prophesy for the people who made up the Bible stories to figure out that there were going to be people who didn't believe them.

And if God is an all-powerful and all-knowing being, wouldn't he know ahead of time how Job would react to all the torture they put him through?  Why would God *need* to take Satan up on that bet?  So he put Job through all that torture for nothing.  To prove it to Satan?  Why would God feel that he needed to prove anything to Satan?

See how ridiculous this all is?

  2. Saying bad things about god to an atheist is no different than saying bad things about Ronald McDonald.

  3. Here's a clue:  Atheists don't actually believe that any gods really exist.

  4. Nothing good or bad can be said about imaginary beings.

If there were a deity or a Satan and said deity took the bet to destroy some innocents life to prove a point, he's evil, period.

  5. You really don't understand what an atheist is, do you?

To an atheist, saying bad things about God is no different then saying bad things about Santa.

  6. You do realize that your example of Satan making a bet with "God" assumes the existence of both, while atheists deny the existence of both.

    .

  7. Asking an atheist to reconsider his or her opinion about your God by citing Biblical scripture is silly.  This question just reveals you to be breathtakingly ignorant where atheism is concerned.

  8. Since I do not believe in either God or Satan, this is a meaningless question.

  9. 1)You're god doesn't exist.  Speaking badly about something that doesn't exist in any way other than figuratively would be nonsensical.

    2)Satan doesn't exist either.

3)As Atheist neither believe in the Christian god, satan nor in the sanctity, truthfulness nor accuracy of the Christian bible, why would Atheists be concerned about the (imagined) implications of its contents?

  10. I don't think Athesits believe in either one, so you're sort of barking up the wrong tree...

But in the spirit of your question, let me have a go (the book of Job is a real favorite of mine!  It's so rich in meaning, don't you think?)

"Cursing God" is a bit different than just ignoring or saying things that are aimed more at offending His followers than acknowledging the existence of God....cursing God is knowing that He is real, but believing - by the current conditions of your life - that God is being unfair to you.  This is probably as old as the belief in God itself, don't you think?  Even Adam tried to blame Eve for the forbidden fruit at first, didn't he?  Wasn't he trying to show how "unfair" God was to blame him for the fruit with that lame defense?  Cain and Abel too...wasn't Cain's jealousy about God's preference for meat instead of vegetables the same as saying God is unfair to me?

If I remember right, didn't you ask a question a month or two ago about s*x, and that you felt it was "unfair" that you have read the Bible and understood God's hopes for your sexual purity before marriage - when others have lived lives of sexual abandon only to turn to God after their fun?  Didn't even the older brother in the Prodigal Son parable think it unfair the father forgave the wayward son when the older boy was always so good?  Don't we always decide that God is being "unfair" whenever the things we want to do are sometimes held in check by what we ought to do?

So my point is this...they have no belief in God in the way we (and many others) do...they will not be "shamed" into belief, or frightened into it by visions of h**l or whatever...the meaning of Christ is so much more important than the historicity or the evidence...and it is though the lives we live that glorify His real presence, not by bantering back and forth in a fruitless barrage of insults vs scare tactics.

    I hope this helps...

  11. Your "story of Job" is one of the sickest works of Fiction I have ever read,

    And...

Your "God" did not in any way "reward" Job for his trouble. Instead, Job was forced to do exactly what you, I, or any other member of this forum would be required to do:

Get a new, DIFFERENT, wife, family, home, & occupation FOR HIMSELF, by himself.

  12. Why would you say bad things about Santa Claus?

Why would you say bad things about the Easter Bunny?

Why would you say things about God?

None of those are real.  It doesn't matter what we say.

Furthermore, it matters even less what your Anthology of Ancient Middle Eastern Mythology (a.k.a. The Holy Bible) says.

  13. It never fails to amaze me that you people can not grasp the simple concept that Atheists don't believe in God or the devil.

  14. Protip: Atheism actually dismisses deities like the devil.

  15. You know, people said that about PeeWee Herman too!  And he turned out to be true!   I think you're on to something!

  16. If your god did exist, then he would be a monster.

mother has children, drowns them = Monster

god creates man, kills man and allows great suffering in the world = monster.

  17. Except the USA, all the most developed countries in the world, where you will find the best quality of life, is where you will also find the highest percentage of atheists.

Is that God's doing? Maybe he lost the bet.

  18. Lion:   I want to type this slowly, so that you can understand it.  I will use small words too.   Atheists don't believe in "god" or Satan.  I hope this helps, so that you won't ask this question 25 more times.

  19. I have absolutely nothing to say about a concept that I do not believe in.

  20. We don't believe in the Devil. Therefore there is no bet. Isn't gambling a sin anyway? Why is God so hypocritical?

  21. Because if someone made a bet like that with my eternal soul at stake, then he is one total sumbeach of a god,and deserving of worse than bad mouthing

  22. First you need to understand that we don't believe in either your god or Satan.  We don't believe that the story you refer to is anything other than a moral lesson told long ago.    When we say the God of the Old Testament is a monster we are referring to the description of him in the book, similar to the way someone would describe a character in a story.  When you ask us to worship this character, we might say that we have trouble believing that such a monster could possibly be the ultimate power in the universe and even if he existed he wouldn't be worthy of worship.

You need to get your head around the simple fact that atheists don't believe that your god is real before you say anything else.

  23. We don't believe "god" made any kind of bet with "satan".

    Sorry.
