Athletes looking good to put up a show in London – Athletics news
Aviva London Grand Prix, the final and most prestigious event before the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, is the event every spectator and athlete is looking forward to. The reason is quite obvious, as this is the point when every athlete is at the
apex of his or her form and fitness and the quality of performance they will display in London will be somewhat a glimpse of what can be expected in Daegu.
With a field stretched upon over 40 world and Olympic medallists, it is hard for one to hint for the pre-favourites. However, on the basis of recent competitions, we can give a picture of the athletes who have relatively greater potential of outdoing their
rivals in the two-day event.
Starting from sprints, which are the most thrilling contests of the tournament, the balance of the field will tilt towards the ever dominating Jamaican athletes. In the presence of Nesta Carter, Asafa Powell and Yohan Blake, one can only predict that one
of these three runners will emerge on the track, but which one of them will be the lucky finisher, is hard to guess before the competition is over.
In the women’s category, spectators will love to see Australian hurdler, Sally Pearson, who boasts of a Personal Best of 12.48 seconds. For having a comparatively lesser intense field to encounter, the Australian girl will definitely have better chances
of standing out from the rest of the performers. The only prominent runner who may challenge her on the field will be local athlete, Tiffany Ofili Porter.
Talking about the men’s hurdling competitions, the open rivalry between David Oliver and Dayron Robles will compel viewers to not miss out on the showdown. Robles, who has not been able to mark a significant performance on the track for long, is particularly
conscious about marking his revival. Moreover, it is not only a question about the revival, rather, it is also about giving out a strong message to Liu Xiang, the former world and Olympic champion from China.
If he fails to perform at the London competition, he will also have to face a confidence deficit at Daegu that may make it difficult for him to carry himself at the global athletics event.
Oliver, who had observed a successful Samsung Diamond League meet in Stockholm, where he was defeated by the hands of Jason Richardson, his countryman, is also looking forward to make a comeback on the track. Talking about his competition against Dayron,
he said, “I always enjoy competing against Dayron, because he is the best. It will be a true test of where I’m at in my last competition before the worlds. One year out from 2012 I want to get a good result in London. I want to leave the city in good form
and with a great feeling for when return next year.”
Every athlete will definitely look forward to display his or her best on the track in London, in order to gain momentum for the important meet in Daegu.
