Athletic Bilbao may end up being forced to pay Osasuna, Javi Martinez’s former club, 800,000 Euros for the move made for the defensive midfielder to Bayern Munich.
The 24-year-old Basque player broke the Bundesliga’s record by costing 40 million Euros to Bayern Munich due to a release clause in his contract with Athletic Bilbao.
Osasuna have made a claim in this forty million Euro deal, stating that they are entitled to some of the money because there was a clause in their deal with Athletic Bilbao which makes their right such.
However, Athletic Bilbao are refusing to cough up the money, and as a result Osasuna are now forced to appeal to FIFA in order to corner Athletic to pay them the eight hundred thousand Euros.
The Spaniard was a result of Osasuna’s youth development, and even played a few matches for their B team in the 2005-2006 season.
However, in 2006, Athletic Bilbao signed the Spaniard while he was barely 17, and paid six million Euros for him.
He played regularly during his time in Athletic Bilbao, and was a very promising player in both defensive midfield, and central defence. He even scored twice in a match against Deportivo la Coruna in 2006.
During his time in Athletic Bilbao, he scored 22 goals in 201 appearances.
On the 29th of August, Bayern Munich paid the Spaniard’s buyout clause of 40 million Euros, and signed a five-year deal with the German Club. He broke the Bundesliga’s record of being the most expensive player, and has even made it clear that
he is going to show his worth to the club.
Due to a clause in the contract made between Osasuna and Athletic Bilbao, Osasuna state that they are awaiting a fee that was part of their sell-on clause.
However, Athletic Bilbao believe that since Martinez has bought out his contract, this is no longer a valid clause.
It should be noted that this is not the first time Athletic Bilbao are claimed to be a bit unreasonable with financial deals.
When http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468 was being sent to the Bundesliga, Bayern claimed that the Spanish team was not being helpful at all with negotiations, and the team also sent complaints about unlawful medical examinations that may have taken place at Bayern with Martinez’s
transfer.
However, it seems as though the matter is left to FIFA, who will have to decide whether Athletic are to pay, and if they do not comply with Osasuna, the matter could possibly go to the courts.
