Athletics Bridge (EA Classic) observes the fall of eight meet records in Dubnica – Athletics news
Dubnica, which hosted the 13th edition of the Athletics Bridge (EA Classic) meeting, observed a worth watching showdown as eight out of 13 disciplines of the event observed lowering of previous meet records.
The event, observed by about 5000 spectators, was opened up by some of the most thrilling performances in the athletic history of Slovakia. The electrifying event was inaugurated by a 100m fastest finish where Richard Thompson, the Beijing medallist breasted
the tape in 10.05 seconds. It was believed that had the weather not been a bit colder, there could have been faster finishes on the cards.
The second position in the run was claimed by Kim Collins, who crossed the finishing line in no later than 10.07 seconds, while for clocking 10.09 seconds, Michael Frater finished the race with a third place on the podium. Dwain Chambers, who had also been
considered as favourite for the meet, could only finish his race in 10.10 seconds, while fifth position was bagged by British runner, Luke Fagan, who took 10.21 seconds before crossing the finishing line.
Thompson, the title and new meet record holder of the event, while commenting on his success in Dubnica said, “It was my last race of the season and I wanted to end it with a bang.” The previous track record stood at 10.12 seconds.
On the Women’s side, it was Schillonie Calvert, the Jamaican sprinter who ended the race in 11.17 seconds for claiming the title as well as the meet record of the event.
The performance delivered by Valerie Adams, the shot put specialist, was also not of lesser quality. Her first attempt landed her throw at a distance of 20.42m, which could only improve as the competition lingered on. Building on her momentum in the third
round, she marked a throw of 20.83 seconds with the next two throws as long as 20.07m and 20.50m, respectively.
Another impressive performer of the event was Betty Heidler, one of the best women Hammer throwers in the world. Just like seven other disciplines in Dubnica, the performance displayed by Heidler also proved to be a meet record. The meet record, broken thrice
in an event, came in rather interestingly. With Heidler throwing for 75.16m, the old record perished. However, this throw certainly was not good enough to sustain her dominance as soon, her rival, Tatyana Lysenko observed a throw of 75.80m.
The competition certainly did not end there as Heidler bounced back and her throw landed an impressive 75.83m. The third position in the event was marked by Yipsi Moreno, whose best throw could land at the distance of 74.21m.
