Athletics - distance run over 400m, track markings?

Question

A friend has just run a 400m from Lane1 starting on the finish line. She was convinced that the officials had started the other runners in the other lanes from the 800m start lines and not the 400m ones. Is this possible and how much distance difference would this make per lane? Thank you for any information on this.
