Actually, he makes thunder, not lightning - I read it in the Thor Bible (Gospel of Marvel).  I can give you proof of his continued existence.  In English, we praise him one day every week - Thursday.

I was a proud Athorist, doggedly pushing the dogma of athorism, certain of my ideals, until someone pointed out to me that "Thursday" is actually a respelling of "Thor's Day."
