They made it sound alright to take prior to my surgery to help with my fear of my upcoming surgerical procedure. I think a nurse told me I just have to tell the Anesthesiologist that day that I'm taking Ativan (antianxiety medication). Is it safe to take week prior to surgery?

  1. My understanding is that Ativan is taken AS NEEDED for anxiety, and that you take it when you are feeling anxious or struggling to relax. Taking the medication for a prolonged use of time can cause an addiction. But you are the only one who knows when you need to take it or not. Just know that if you do take it for more than a few weeks that going off the medicine is going to be uncomfortable.  You have to taper your dose every 3-4 days as the withdrawal symptoms are not pleasant. But you will be fine, just take as needed and follow your doctors advice! Good luck with your surgery!
