Atlanta Braves’ Jonny Venters put on Disabled List due to ‘elbow impingement’ - MLB Update
Suffering with an ‘elbow impingement’, Jonny Venters lands on the Disabled list as the Atlanta Braves call Luis Avilan from the AA Mississippi as a replacement. Within few days, it will be known as to how severe the injury is and when he can come back. According
to reports, since anything related to elbow is always a scary proposition, one can expect a lengthy outage from the season.
Following an injury to Brandon Beachy, another starting pitcher for the Braves, it was the second time their pitcher has been injured.
Venters has struggled this season. Unable to replicate his performance in the last few years, he has disappointed the manager, Fredi Gonzalez.
In most of the starts, he leaked runs and failed to deliver scoreless spells of innings. Far from taking the burden out of the bullpen, he caused it to being exposed early. Every time he was sent on the mound, he let the opponents surged to a lead and put
the team under pressure right away.
In light of this, Venters can take the injury as an opportunity to go back and meditate about what he is going wrong. He can think without constraints of the game about ways to improve.
By this, once he returns, he will be more confident. With all the issues worked out, becoming the kind of starter the manager wanted him to be from the day one will be easier.
Meanwhile, his injury opens an opportunity for Luis Avilan, who is coming after putting up solid performances in the Minor League. His record against the lefties has been terrific. However, throwing against Major Leaguers will be a challenge. If he can prove
equally good in the Majors, he can cement his place in the rotation permanently.
Recently, Braves had to sign a Minor League contract with the veteran Ben Sheets owing to an injury to Beachy and unimpressive performance by one of their most reliable starters, Tim Hudson. The idea was to let Ben go through Minor League games and return
to the season after finding some rhythm.
In this respect, the latest injury is not a good sign for the club. Only way they can stabilise their faltering rotation is by witnessing Avilan throwing quality innings consistently.
