Atlanta Braves: Regular season results – MLB August 2011
Atlanta Braves looked in supreme form as they ended the month of July 2011 with a series victory over Florida Marlins to improve their win-loss record to 63-46. It was a remarkable achievement by Fredi Gonzalez and his men considering the kind of start they
had to their regular season campaign.
With series’ wins over Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals, Florida Marlins, Baltimore Orioles and Colorado Rockies in July, things were looking very bright for the leading NL East team. Fredi Gonzalez aimed to give similar results in the month of August
2011 as well to top the Wild Card standings table.
However, the Braves failed to live up the expectations in game one of a three match series against Washington Nationals. Making a large number of unforced errors during the contest, they let the opposition team dictate the terms. Wasting opportunities at
crucial moments, they really did not help themselves.
Braves’ poor form continued in game two of the series as their pitchers struggled to throw according to the plan. The Nationals made them pay heavily as they posted a comfortable 9-3 win to take a decisive 2-0 lead in the series. Looking to get things back
on track, Fredi Gonzalez’s side displayed some high quality baseball in third and final game of the series.
Dan Uggla pulled out of his horrendous slump as he homered and extended his career best hitting streak to 25 games. Freddie Freeman was also up to the task as he batted in two RBIs with two hits and Atlanta Braves rallied past the Nationals to avoid their
first series sweep of the season.
"The first couple months, I was hitting the ball hard but had some awful, awful luck," Uggla said. "You stay positive, keep grinding out some at-bats, get a couple to fall through, get a little confidence going and keep going from there."
"You don't explain it. You believe the back of the baseball card. You believe the history," Gonzalez said. "For whatever reason, who knows, we're all human, maybe the first two months there was some anxiety or pressure about coming over to a new organization.
"
The Braves put up a great show in their next three match series against New York Mets. Defeating the Mets in a thrilling third and deciding game, they earned their first series victory of the month in great style. Crushing Florida Marlins with a 3-0 in a
three match series, the Braves looked on top of their game as they enhanced their win-loss record to 69-49. With wins over San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs, the Braves ended the month of August on a very positive note.
