Atlanta Braves: Regular season results – MLB July 2011
With a decent 47-25 win-loss record, Atlanta Braves were in a very healthy position in the Wild Card standings. Showing great fighting spirit, determination and mental strength, the Braves had turned things around brilliantly with some great performances
in May and June 2011. Fredi Gonzalez and his men were looking to achieve similar results in the month of July 2011 to top the Wild Card standings table.
In their first three match series against Baltimore Orioles, the Braves looked in supreme form. In game one of the series, the pitchers pitched in nine scoreless innings to let their side secure a thumping 4-0 win. However, Jair Jurrjens was the star of
the show as he earned his 11th win of the season, which also served as a well-timed advertisement for his candidacy for a place in the NL All Star team.
"A bouncer," Jurrjens said of Jones' hit, shaking his head. "I would prefer to give up a line drive off the wall."
"That was a pretty good performance that maybe will get some people's attention," said Braves’ manager Fredi Gonzalez, adding Jurrjens deserves to "at least be on the team."
The Braves continued their incredible form in game two of the series as well as they held their nerves in a nail biting encounter. David Ross did a wonderful job with the bat as he smashed the second grand slam of his career to help his side rally past the
Orioles to clinch a 2-0 series victory.
Despite having the momentum on their side, Fredi Gonzalez and his men failed to control their nerves in another tense finish in game three. Making unforced errors at crucial moments, the Braves let the opposition team secure a narrow 5-4 win in third and
final game.
With 49-26 win-loss record, things were looking very bright for Atlanta Braves. Everybody in the team looked in confident mood. In a four match series against Colorado Rockies, the Braves raised their game play to an entirely new level. Crushing their rivals
in each game, the Braves earned a memorable series sweep, which also improved their position in Wild Card standings.
In game three, the Braves dominated their opponents in almost all aspects of the game. Jair Jurrjens, once again delivered the goods for his side and he earned his twelfth win in fifteen starts to take his team to glory. Dan Uggla also hit his second run
of the season on two hits, to lift his batting average to 0.183.
"It's nice to see him hitting the ball hard," Gonzalez said. "It's not all of a sudden. There have been some signs."
With wins over Washington Nationals, Pittsburgh Pirates and Florida Marlins, the Braves ended the month on a pretty decent note.
