Atlanta Braves aim to make calculated transfers – MLB Update
The Atlanta Braves finished just behind Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East division, but failed to earn qualification for the playoffs, citing a phenomenal winning percentage by the Phillies and thus an inflated gap between the top two teams
of the division.
Further to their disadvantage, they lost their grip at the top of the NL Wild Card standings on the last day of the season after being swept by the Phillies in the three-game series. The St. Louis Cardinals banked on this dip in form of their rivals and
ensured a win in the season-ending series to topple the Braves in the standings.
The Cardinals not only held the Phillies in the NL Division Series, but comprehensively overcame the Milwaukee Brewers in the Championship Series to win the pennant, becoming the tenth Wild Card team in the history of Major League Baseball to make it to
the World Series.
History was written when the Redbirds made a momentous comeback in the Fall Classic to grab the Championship, overcoming the Texas Rangers 4-3 in the seven-game series. The Braves would have thought that had they secured the Wild Card spot, the Championship
could have been theirs for the taking. Now, Atlanta’s general manager Frank Wren wants to ensure that calculated trades are made during the offseason to ensure a strengthened roster for the next season.
The Braves are desperately in need of a shortstop and an offensively strong out-fielder, but there has been no movement by the management in this regard, thus far. Although there are rumours that Jair Jurrjens and Martin Prado might be in the frame to be
traded out, but Wren has adopted a policy of not addressing rumours and thus not commenting on this assertion.
There have been a few lucrative offers to top free agents by teams, but Wren believes that it is still early in the offseason and there might be a few offers later as time progresses. The GM hinted that it will be worth waiting till November 23, when the
teams decide that which of their free agent players will be offered arbitration. In case of signing a player with arbitration, the signing team will not have to give u a draft pick.
