Atlanta Braves blank San Diego Padres 6-0 as Chipper Jones strikes two home runs - MLB Update
The third baseman Chipper Jones spearheads the Atlanta Braves’ offence with two home-runs as he helps the team beat San Diego Padres 6-0 at Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia on August 16, 2012 in the last game of the four match series.
Backed by an impeccable show by the starting pitcher, the Braves enjoyed an easy victory. Throwing complete game by the starter Kris Medlen and a fabulous show by Jones in the match meant that the Padres will find it extremely difficult to bounce back.
It was a rare game which saw the Braves’ starter completing nine innings and leaking just five hits. In light of the fact that Atlanta’s starters generally struggle on the mound, it was a special game for the team in this context.
Offensively, along with Jones, the Braves’ right fielder Jason Heyward turned out to be the most successful in terms of connecting hits.
Heyward struck three hits in four at-bats. Their second baseman Dan Uggla was 1-for-4 on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Jones drove in for two runs as he slammed two hits in four at-bats.
Braves’ manager Fredi Gonzalez is impressed by the throws that Medlen pitched in the match and the way he restricted batters.
"He was able to throw a complete game because he can field his position," Gonzalez said. "Very few guys in our rotation, maybe in the majors, makes that play early in the game where he throws out Marquis at the plate. Usually you go to first base on that
play, including me. I was looking over at first."
Jones believes the game is another addition to the spectacular moments he experienced so far in the season. It is not for the first time Jones struck home runs in a game and made the contest one-sided as a result.
"You always want to make a splash and bring people to their feet," Jones said. "This is just another of a handful of games this year that have been awfully special to me."
The win has strengthened the second position of the Braves on the table in the National League East Division. They will be trying to make sure their momentum remains on course as they begin the next series.
