Atlanta Braves brush aside Philadelphia Phillies 6-1 as Ben Sheets shines - MLB Update
The starter Ben Sheets carries the momentum from his last quality starts as he led the Atlanta Braves to a 6-1 triumph against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 6, 2012 in the first game of the three match
series.
Keeping the Braves on course, Sheets ascertains that the flurry of injuries to some of the starters will not affect the club’s hunger for winning games this year.
Soon after Atlanta witnessed their rotation depleting, a Minor League contract was signed with Sheets, in the hope to promote him to the Major League after few starts there.
However, he was never conceived by experts as someone who can eliminate the pitching loopholes overnight. In this context, his continuous success thus far suggests that he is certainly going to help the Braves in the season.
Sheets pitched little more than seven innings on Monday. He yielded seven hits and gave up one run.
"Thank God I didn't have to dominate with a strikeout because I didn't have one," Sheets said. "Anytime I have two strikes on a hitter I want to strike him out because then nothing bad can happen, but outs are good too."
Except for the fourth inning, the Phillies were scoreless throughout the game. On the other hand, the Braves time-and-again experienced innings in which they scored runs.
After Atlanta managed three runs in the third, it was just a matter of time that they would win, because the Phillies’ offence was hopelessly incapacitated.
The first baseman Freddie Freeman drove in two runs for the Braves. In five at-bats, he struck one hit on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Braves will be pleased with the fact that their catcher Brian McCann finally found hits on plate in the game. He connected two hits in four at-bats.
As far as the Phillies’ starter was concerned, Vance Worley had a forgettable time on the mound. In little over three innings, he surrendered four runs and walked three.
"I definitely wasn't feeling my best, but I wanted to go out there and pitch for my team," Worley said. "I went out there with heart."
The Phillies are sinking deeper after every game. Their slump is apparently an unprecedented one in the clubs’ recent history.
For the next two games remaining in the series, Phillies will be looking to find a way out to record wins.
