Atlanta Braves defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 1-0 – MLB Update
The Atlanta Braves blanked the Arizona Diamondbacks 1-0 to take the three-game series unscathed at Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, August 21.
The Braves are now on a four-game winning streak and are just 6.5 games behind National League and East division leaders Philadelphia Phillies. This win helped them improve their win-loss record to 76-52 and cement their place as potential candidates for
playoffs via the Wild Card system.
Tim Hudson was a sensation at the mound as he pitched seven epic innings amid three hits and seven strike-outs to crush the Diamondbacks. Hudson displayed immense arm strength and variety as he threw 98 pitches and managed 60 strikes to bring his earned-run
average down to 3.01 for the season. His performance earned him his 13th win for the season, taking his win-loss tally to 13-7.
The distinguished pair of Jonny Venters and Craig Kimbrel then took charge in the eighth and ninth inning respectively to complete what was a scintillating performance by the Braves. Both relievers gave away a hit each in their spell and did not allow any
scoring opportunity. Venters held his 27th game of the season while Kimbrel continued to impress in his rookie year and took his tally of saves to 39 this season. He is now the top candidate to win the Rookie of the Year Award.
Josh Collmenter could not hold things together for the Diamondbacks in the low scoring encounter and his lack of precision cost his team a game which could have gone to the wire. Collmenter pitched seven wayward innings and leaked four hits and one massive
homer which eventually became the game-winner. He lost his eighth game of the season with just seven wins to his credit.
Collmenter was replaced by David Hernandez in the eighth inning and even though he pitched in a near-perfect inning, the pitchers from the opposite side were too good for their batters.
Diamondbacks are now on a five-game losing-streak but continue to lead the NL West division by 1.5 games. However, they would want to end this streak here to ensure themselves a postseason spot.
