Atlanta Braves defeat New York Mets 1-0 - MLB Update
The Atlanta Braves bounced back to blank the New York Mets 1-0 on Saturday, September 17 after a 12-2 battering on Friday, September 16 at Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia.
Tim Hudson kept the visitors at bay as he pitched a magical spell of eight innings to obliterate the Mets and give the Braves an edge in the Wild Card standings. Hudson threw a total of 113 pitches and conceded just four hits to bring his earned-run average
down to 3.19 for the season. He struck-out ten batters in this stretch to complete 150 for the season and subsequently register his 15th win this year.
Hudson vigilantly mixed his fastball with the curveball and the odd changeup delivery to add variety to precision and hence warn other teams of the gallantry in Atlanta’s bull-pen for the postseason. Craig Kimbrel followed suit to pitch a perfect ninth yet
again for his 45th save in 51 chances this season. Kimbrel has defied all odds to be rated as one of the best closers this season and the Braves will want him to replicate his form in the playoffs, where things matter the most now.
Braves did not do well offensively but it proved to be enough in the end to redeem glory after they had been humiliated in the first game. Talking to reporters after the game, Hudson said, “Losing wasn't an option today. We didn't get much, but we got enough.
We've let some people down as a staff the last couple weeks. It was a game we needed to win."
R.A. Dickey kept the Mets in contention throughout the game but Chipper Jones drove in a single in the eighth inning to give the Braves a one-run advantage over the visitors and eventually seize the fixture. Jayson Heyward scored for Atlanta to hand Dickey
his 13th loss of the season with just eight wins against his name this year.
Jones remained humble after his winning-RBI and stated that he just concentrates on seeing the ball and then centering it.
Tim Byrdak came in to relief Dickey but his spell was restricted to just two pitches after his team failed to score in the top of the ninth.
The three-game series is now level at 1-1 with the third game scheduled for Sunday, September 18.
