Atlanta Braves defeat New York Mets 7-5 in Spring Training - MLB Update
Freddie Freeman gives Atlanta Braves an edge as they beat New York Mets 7-5 in a close Grapefruit League game played at Digital Domain Park in Port St. Lucie, Florida on March 27, 2012.
Mets gave David Wright another chance to experience a few at-bats before the start of the season. As he made an impressive comeback from injury in the last game, he is expected to play more games.
Although manager Terry Collins plans to give him rest for next game, at-least 30 at-bats the management believes Wright will require for restoring his composure on the plate.
While Braves were dominant from the start, Mets picked up the pace in the fifth by adding three runs, bridging the Mets’ lead to one.
In last part of the game, Braves’ relievers Julio Lugo and Ryan Buchter threw scoreless innings and did not allow the Mets to get any runs. Their batters on the other hand kept strengthening their lead.
Finally, the Braves had a chance to see one of their pitchers putting up an improved show. Their starter, Buddy Carlyle, pitched four innings and showed little sign of fatigue during his time on the mound. He gave just one walk and managed two strike-outs
while conceding three hits.
"It was nice to see Buddy come up and give us four strong innings, and Freddie, it's been three or four games now where he is starting to see those at-bats get better and better, so that's a good sign," said Braves’ manager Fredi Gonzalez.
Freddie Freeman lifted Atlanta with his home-run while continuing his solid performance in the last game. On two at-bats, he managed two hits and not only did he get two walks, he accumulated three runs of his own. While rightly justifying with his 2012
Spring Training SLG of .361, he added three RBIs as well.
"I've been feeling pretty comfortable the last week, so I was just trying to get some got swings on the ball and keep it going," Freeman said. "I'm just trying to get my swing back up through the middle here.”
Mets’ starter Chris Schwinden was roughed up in his two innings. Languishing in Spring Training with a below average ERA of 5.19, it was no surprise that he gave up four earned runs including a home-run and two walks.
Even if the Mets have lost, they showed in the match that they will give Braves a tough time on April 5 in their regular season contest.
