Atlanta Braves defeat San Diego Padres 10-1 – MLB Update
The Atlanta Braves put in a brilliant performance to beat the San Diego Padres 10-1 at Petco Park, San Diego on Saturday, June 25.
Losing by a mammoth score of 11-2 in the previous game, the Braves came up with an altogether different strategy this time.
Jair Jurrjens became the first ten-game winner in the National League with the six strong innings he pitched and as the Braves’ offence unleashed a hitting streak that crumbled the Padres’ defence and shattered hopes.
For Gonzalez, Jurrjens were of great significance in the Braves’ victory. "For me, he's been the most consistent guy we've had," Gonzalez said. "Even nights like tonight, when he didn't have his good stuff, he still kept you in the game.”
Chipper Jones laid a solid foundation for the Braves with his first inning single in the 2-hit spell of Dustin Moseley following whom Jurrjens pitched a hitless and scoreless inning. Nate McLouth doubled the Braves lead with the throwing error of centre-fielder
Maybin.
Alberto Gonzalez scored the only run for the Padres in the third inning. Afterwards, the Padres’ hitters struggled to confidently confront the Braves starter.
While Moseley was throwing good pitches, the sixth inning provided the Braves’ hitter Freddie Freeman an opportunity to take the lead up to 3-1 with his single accompanied by a strong inning of Jurrjens.
"We're capable of doing that, really," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "When you look at our offense, I know we haven't done it consistently, but we're capable of putting those type of numbers up."
Dan Uggla, Alex Gonzalez and Nate McLouth scored a single each in the eighth inning to mete out the same treatment to the Padres’ defence that was the fate of the Braves only a night ago, as Atlanta had lost by 11-2.
Uggla played one of the most breathtaking hits of the night, driving in three-runs which preceded the second run that Chipper Jones earned. The four-run 9th inning perished any hopes of the Padres to comeback in the game.
Scott Linebrink pitched a scoreless ninth inning to accomplish a much-sought 10-1 victory in the wake of a 11-2 defeat that the Padres had inflicted upon them only a night before.
The Braves did an amazing job to comeback from their previous loss to the Padres and put in a good performance to comprehensively beat San Diego. The Padres struggled throughout the game as they were unable to get their offence to get going and put some
serious runs on the board. The Braves took on the Padres’ pitching line-up with a tremendous amount of aggression, only to have it pay off with a brilliant win.
The three-game series has now assumed a new significance as the two teams will compete on Sunday to outplay the other.
