Atlanta Braves defeat San Francisco Giants 5-4 in last inning for fourth straight win – MLB Update
Atlanta Braves carried their winning streak over the San Francisco Giants as they overruled the defending World Series Champions 5-4 in the first outing of the series at Turner Field, Atlanta on Monday, August 15 to acquire their fourth straight win of the
season.
"We're right in the thick of things," said Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy. "This is August. We've got time to make this up."
Having a 3-0 shutout record over the Giants in the previous game, the Braves continued their streak with another close triumph. The Braves made late comeback from 4-2 and took the game with 5-4 in the last inning of the game. Martin Prado hit a fast single
against the Giants’ strong closer Brian Wilson to add an RBI single to start the three-run ninth. First baseman Freddie Freeman closed down the game, hitting a line drive RBI double.
"I knew I was going to get a pitch to hit," Freeman said.
The Braves did not let Wilson to complete his inning. The Giants reliable closer, Wilson lost his fourth game of the season in less than a single inning.
"I'm not worried about what a hitter can do," Wilson said. "I pitch to my strengths. They hit them where we were not.”
On the other hand, the Braves’ closer Cristhian Martinez won his first game of the season, tossing scoreless top of the ninth inning. Tim Hudson worked eight innings and allowed four runs on five hits.
The Braves’ catcher Brian McCann also homered in the first inning to lead the game off. Then Jose Constanza scored an RBI single in the second inning to score 2-0.
The Giants’ starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner was brilliant again with his seven innings, in which he allowed only two runs and two walks while struck-out five batters. However, Wilson’s loose game prevented Madison to get his eighth win of the season.
Javier Lopez also performed well, tossing scoreless eighth inning.
Giants’ Orlando Cabrera and Eli Whiteside each scored an RBI single while Nate Schierholtz and Mike Fontenot each launched a homer to post four runs.
The Giants have gone under great pressure and according to experts they will have to utilise a different strategy to defeat the Braves this season and get back to their winning ways.
