Atlanta Braves defeat Toronto Blue Jays 5-1 to sweep the series – MLB Update
The Atlanta Braves swept the three-game series on Wednesday, June 22 against the Toronto Blue Jays with a 5-1 victory at Turner Field, Atlanta.
Winning the first game 2-0, the second by 5-1 and now the third by 5-1 once again, the wins testified to the growing defence of the Braves which rendered the rival team unable to get anywhere against them.
Brandon Beachy pitched six innings in the game and allowed only one run with four hits, keeping his ERA at 1.50. "This just shows how good our pitching staff is," McCann said. "They've kept us in every game this year."
Having remained on the disabled list since May 14 as a result of a strained left oblique, Beachy started a robust campaign to outrival Jo-Jo Reyes and incapacitate Toronto’s hitters by pitching a scoreless inning.
While he was firm in determining a favourable result of the game for the Braves, Dan Uggla drove in a two run homer off the straining Reyes’ fastball. Reyes gave up a total of three hits in the inning.
Beachy faltered somewhat in the third inning when Jose Bautista had a hit and a run to stage a comeback of his team in the game, which did not seem to materialise owing to Beachy’s unshakable grip on the game.
Brian McCann, who hit his 16th hit this month, scored a two-run homer in the third inning to take the lead up to 4-1, deepening the Blue Jays’ woes and putting his team be in a strong position.
After pitching the sixth inning, Beachy was replaced by Scott Linebrink while Jon Rauch came to relieve Camp. Brooks Conrad found an opportunity in him and had a hit to bring the Braves to an irreversibly strong 5-1 lead.
The Braves’ relievers who were impressive in the previous games maintained their characteristically good performance and pitched scoreless innings to comfortably sweep the three-game series by winning the game 5-1.
Compared to seven hits that the Braves had, the Jays’ offence came up with six hits but could only score one run contrary to the five run lead that resulted with their victory in the game.
The Braves managed to put in a tremendous effort, as they restricted the Blue Jays’ offence. They played aggressively and were backed up with their effective defence. Toronto struggled throughout the game, as their offence was unable to get anything going
on a consistent level. They will be looking to improve their performance in their next match-up.
Only time will tell how long the Braves will be able to carry their winning momentum and good form for the rest of the season.
