Atlanta Braves edge out Miami Marlins 4-3 as Kris Medlen strikes out eight - MLB Update
Starter Kris Medlen delivers again and strikes-out eight as the Atlanta Braves outscore Miami Marlins 4-3 at Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia on September 25, 2012 in the first game of the three match series.
Braves fought back in the last inning after the Marlins kept them behind for the most part of the game.
In a low scoring game when the Marlins posted two runs in the seventh, it was easy to believe that they will end up winning.
However, the formidable Braves’ offence performed and scored runs when they were needed the most. As a result it helped the team snatch a decent victory from the Marlins.
Kris Medlen completed seven innings and gave up three runs. If it was not for the last inning upsurge by the offence, he may have suffered the loss. Similarly he was helped by the closer Craig Kimbrel, who finished the ninth scoreless to avoid a defeat.
First baseman Freddie Freeman hurt the Marlins most as the home-run that he slammed obliterated their hopes for victory on Tuesday. He managed two hits in four at-bats.
The win has provided the Braves a Wild-Card berth. No wonder celebrations ensued as soon as the winning run was scored.
Freeman heaps praise on Chipper Jones and talks about his greatness as a player.
"He's done it all year," Freeman said. "That's what he's a Hall of Famer for. He got the rally started today."
The spot won in the playoffs now have ameliorated the sufferings of the Braves that they endured last year by collapsing in September.
Jones has stated that the lessons learnt last year have contributed toward their success this season. The Braves prepared rigorously for playing effectively under pressure and the results have followed.
"They took the attitude last year to try and hang on," Jones said. "This year we took the bull by the horns. We're shooting for the stars. We're still shooting for the division until they close us out."
The Braves will be carrying their momentum forward in the remaining games of the series. Ideally they will like to sweep the Marlins and enter the post-season with confidence.
